Down on the Farm: 6/5/2024

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats edged out the Albuquerque Isotopes 3-2:

Blake Sabol C- 1 for 3, BB, SB(5).  BA= .214.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 10.25.
Reggie Crawford LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.04.
Wil Jensen RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.00.
Justin Garza RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.45.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Altoona Curve 10-6:

Carter Howell RF/LF- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .283.
Grant McCray CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .219.
Allan Cerda LF- 2 for 3, HR(2).  BA= .200.
Christian Koss SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .467.
Carson Ragsdale RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 4.32.
Tanner Kiest RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 2.84.

Carter Howell was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2022.  He had a terrific season last year split between A San Jose and A+ Eugene.  Those guys often hit the wall in AA but he's thriving there as well so far.

A+:  Tri-City Dust Devils blew away the Eugene Emeralds 7-2:

Alexander Suarez LF- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .267.
Matt Mikulski LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.76.

After a couple of disastrous appearances early in May, Mikulski has allowed just 1 ER in 9.1 IP over his last 5 appearances.

A:  Stockton Ports topped the San Jose Giants 10-6:

Jonah Cox CF- 1 for 2, 3 BB, 4 SB(30).  BA= .324.
Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .281.
Cesar Quintas RF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(5).  BA= .235.
Jean Carlos Sio 2B- 1 for 3, HR(3), BB.  BA= .205.
Tommy Kane LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.53.

I really liked what I saw of Cesar Quintas when I saw him hit a monster HR in Lake Elsinore.  That was May 24.  That HR started a 9-game hit streak in which he is 15 for 34 with 4 HR's and 5 doubles.  In an era when SB's have all but disappeared from MLB, is a prospect who hits .300 and steals bases at the top of the batting order like Jonah Cox relevant?

ACL:  Giants pounded the Guardians 8-2(7 innings):

Eliam Sandoval LF- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .298.
Ryan Reckley 2B- 1 for 2, HBP.  BA= .286.
Spencer Miles RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

If you've forgotten like me, Spencer Miles was the Giants 4'th round draft pick in 2022.  He missed all of last season and is now starting a rehab assignment.

DSL:  Giants Black beat Arizona Red 4-2(completion of suspended game from Monday):

Vinicius Dos Santos PR/RF(17 yo)- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= 1.000.
Marlon Franco RHP(21 yo)- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

  1. Yes a player like Jonah Cox who hits .300 and steals a crap ton of bases is relevant. Those guys are rare and they provide so much value. Most of the speed guys now a days don’t hit for high average and don’t have enough pop to compensate. The type of players we have been throwing in the lead off position under Farhan has been an absolute joke.

  2. They might be the rarest commodity in all of baseball. Players who can actually hit for average with speed and no power don’t really exist anymore. Billy Hamilton and Dee Gordon tried to be those guys but could never hit enough. Kwan and even Lee are trying to be those guys but falling short. If Cox can hit and run at the major league level he will be the first in maybe 3 decades
