Game Wrap 6/23/2024: Cardinals 5 Giants 3

The Giants managed to thwart a perfect game by Sonny Gray RHP but a late rally once again fell short and they were swept out of a steamy St Louis.  Key Lines:

Patrick Bailey C- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .292.  Bailey's no-doubt HR broke up Gray's perfecto in the 7'th inning.  Bailey had a rough game behind the plate as the Cardinals stole 4 bases but that seemed to be all on Logan WebbDave Fleming and Hunter Pence seemed pretty convinced Webb was tipping his intent to come to the plate and the Cards were getting huge jumps.

Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.  Webb seemed all out of sorts in the first inning when he gave up a 3-spot but to his credit he hung in there and finished up with scoreless frames in innings 3-6 on another steamy afternoon in St Loo.  The holding runners things is a whole other story and something he will have to address.

Padres are trailing the Brewers 5-1 at this writing so the Giants may remain 3 games behind the Padres in the Wild Card playoff race.

The Giants travel home to face the Cubs to start a 4-game series with TBD facing TBD.

  1. just gotta hang in there until the break. we should have some fresh arms coming from sacramento tomorrow. the focus is 2025 at this point.

  2. Snell was always gonna be a big mistake..."Giants desperate for pitching help, but Blake Snell hasn’t ‘felt like myself’" https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/giants/article/giants-desperate-pitching-help-blake-snell-not-19530849.php

  3. I think I may have lost a comment somewhere. I appreciated everybody who reads and comments. I do weed out some of the more strident and gratuitous FZ bashing but post Most of them. I may have hit a wrong button on one here. Giants are in a tough situation. It looks to me like they are out of bullets until at least the All-Star Break. By then they may well have dropped out of the postseason race. In that event I agree the focus of the trade deadline should be 2025. At this point it might be best for both Snell and the Giants to accept he's not going to be right this season and he'll be back next season. Let's get him ready for a big 2025.

    1. i feel the same way about keaton winn and his ongoing elbow issues. he tried his best at starting and if and when he does return whether in 2024 or 2025, he needs to be converted to a reliever with his health issues. if it does become roster eval time after the break, that may be the time to start to clock on hunter bishop with him being rule 5 next season and give matos a long leash.

    2. giants kinda need another of-er, would they make another 40-man roster change to get one? won't be sorry to see brooks go, altho he was suburb in sac, much better than bishop there, he's been less than no help for giants. seem like could make that a swap just to see, somethings gotta give
