Down on the Farm: 5/30/2018

AAA  El Paso Chihuahuas nipped the Sacramento River Cats 4-3:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(8).  BA= .259.
Austin Slater RF- 2 for 4, HR(4), SB(5).  BA= .366.
Hunter Pence LF- 1 for 5.  BA= .316.
Daniel Camarena RHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= .075.
Josh Osich LHP- 0.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 6.35.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.00.

Austin Slater seems ready for MLB work anytime he is needed.  Do the Giants drop someone to make room for Hunter Pence or do they eat the remainder of his contract?  Is Josh Osich done?

AA  Bowie Baysox vs Richmond Flying Squirrels postponed due to Wet Grounds.

A+  Visalia Rawhide outlasted the San Jose Giants 3-2:

Alen Hanson SS- 1 for 3.  BA= .333.
Joe Panik 2B- 0 for 3, BB.  BA= .000.
Jalen Miller DH- 2 for 4, SB(6).  BA= .312.
Sandro Cabrera LHP- 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.12.

Alen Hanson begins a rehab assignment and Joe Panik moves his rehab to San Jose to stay close to home.  Sandro Cabrera has had a nice season so far, but the K/BB needs some work.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets outscored the Greenville Drive 9-6(completion of suspended game from 5/20):

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 5, HR(4).  BA= .218.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 2 for 5.  BA= .245.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 3 for 4, HR(5), SB(12).  BA= .313.
Nick Hill LF- 4 for 5, 2 SB(4).  BA= .341.
Aaron Phillips RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.96.
John Russell RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.54.

This game goes in the record books under 5/20/2018 so the stats reflect the player's performances up to that point.

Low A  Greenville Drive topped the Augusta Greenjackets 5-4(7 innings):

Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 2 for 3, 2B, HBP.  BA= .253.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 3, BB, 2 SB(14).  BA= 323.

Jeffry Parra C- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .205.

  1. Giants Fandom watching to see how the OF shakes out. I would drop JAX for sure. Would pick Slater over Blanco. Pence has won me over with his humble attitude and attempt to reboot - but is there room for him on 25? I bet he gets optioned to work on his new swing mechanics.

  2. I would give Pence a chance to fail before Slater, plus he does know AT&T's RF better than anyone -- can he still do it? Probably as good as McCutchen!

  3. People want to dump Pence because of last season and early 2018 season, but his poor performances were greatly influenced by his injuries, leg early last season, hand this season. I don't see the Giants just dumping Pence without kicking the tires on his new batting mechanics and seeing what the results are. After all, from the end of July 2018 to the end of the season, he hit .291/.360/.467/.827 with a .326 BABIP (career .319 BABIP; 2015-2017 .321 BABIP), so the Giants are not going to dump the possibility that he can be a good hitter again, and rather keep him as a lethal bat off the bench, plus backup should anything happens to Williamson or McCutchen. Heck, Cutch isn't hitting for much power this month, in spite of all his hard hit balls, so I can see Bochy playing matchups with lineups where Pence will get starts in LF and RF, depending on who he's good against while the starter is bad against.

Gorkys might be the better fielding CF to many eyes, but the stats on bb-reference says that all three CF this season has been bad to Span-ish. And his BABIP is sky high.

So it will be interesting to see who the Giants jettison (if they don't find a DL way to get out of it). Gorkys has been hitting and arguably best CF. Jackson has the biggest contract of the three, but not so big that he can't be dumped. Blanco has not hit for much nor fielded well either, suggesting he's the logical choice to go, except that he's the only left-handed hitter in the OF. Not that you can't have all RHH, but that seems to be a preference for Bochy and Sabean.

On the pitching side, I was extremely surprised to see Snelten DFAed, as I had originally thought it possible that he would win the lefty reliever spot over Osich, until Watson was signed. From there, Gomez looks likely as the next guy to go when Bumgarner returns. And probably Valdez when Melancon returns. Would have to think Osich is also on the bubble as well, so he could be gone instead of Valdez, perhaps. Any others?

    1. If it were up to me, Jackson would get the axe. Today. Right now. As I type I'd be calling 'The Turk' to escort him out of the building.

Also, you meant 2017. We haven't gotten to July, 2018 unless I missed a year somehow...

As for Pence, if he's hitting and we're selling, I'd put him up for trade. Same goes for McCutchen and Longoria. None of them are good with the glove anymore and this is not a competitive team.
