Game Wrap 5/15/2015: Giants 10 Reds 2

Giants hitters torched the Reds pitching on bizarre night when one of the riverboat smokestacks in CF that are generally used for launching fireworks after HR's caught fire causing an evacuation for some of the fans and a fire department operation involving some very tall ladders to put it out.  Key Lines:

Gregor Blanco- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(2).  BA= .257.  Blanco is 7 for 13 with 3 BB's over his last 4 games and seems to have supplanted Aoki in LF, at least for the time being.

Joe Panik- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .292.  The first two batters in the lineup set the table by getting on base 6 times in 10 PA's.

Buster Posey- 1 for 5, HR(6).  BA= .286.  Buster's shot was reminiscent of the the grand slam he hit in the 2012 playoffs.  This one was more down the line but hit off of the upper deck.  Drove in a runner in front of him.

Brandon Belt- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .291.  Hard to believe this is Belt's first HR of the season.  He sure did break out of his strikeout slump from the last 3 games in a big way!

Brandon Crawford- 2 for 4, SB(2).  BA= .263.  What is Brandon's WAR up to now?

Madison Bumgarner- 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.20.  Probably not Bummy's best game, but more than good enough on a night when the Giants offense was hitting on all cylinders.

The Win evened the Giants record at 18-18.  They stand 5 games behind the Dodgers in 3'rd place in the NL West pending the outcome of the Dodgers game against the Rockies which the Dodgers lead 6-0 at this writing.  The Giants are 1 game behind in the race for the final Wild Card playoff spot.

Ryan Vogelsong faces Mike Leake tomorrow.  Hunter Pence is scheduled to rejoin the club tomorrow also.  Who is on the hot seat to lose a roster spot?  Gotta be either one of the backup catchers or Joaquin Arias.  I'll bet on one of the catchers and I think it will most likely be Susac.

  1. I was wondering about that too, Aoki, and he hasn't really been hitting that well for the past 2-3 weeks, it is kind of like Freddy Lewis in his last season with us, he was hot for two weeks and after two months of cold hitting, his OBP was still good and Naysayers were calling for Sabean's head. And, clearly, Blanco wants to play again, so he humped up and been hitting nicely for a while when given the opportunity, good for him. I think that Bochy will still mostly start Aoki in LF, but give Blanco plenty of ABs there, CF, Maxwell will rest Pence occassionally plus DH (or Pence DH with Maxwell in RF), what do you think?

David B Fleming delighted to say that Posey did not reach "Mat Latos Land" when describing the homer. I guess he'll never forgive Latos for throwing that baseball into the parking lot and destroying the moonroof of his new car.

    Belt! BCraw!

Given that it's Cincinnati, Bumgarner did great giving up on the 2 runs/homers.

  2. Was at the game...weird watching the game go on as the bleachers are being evacuated and the fire department at work. Posey and Belt's balls were crushed. Good day to be a Giants fan on the road.

  3. Bochy now has a 'nice problem' in the OF. Pagan is playing well. Pence is back. Maxwell is playing lights-out defense.. Blanco has gotten his bat going and has been red-hot this last week. And Aoki, who'd been in a wicked slump, hit .294 the past week.

While Belt's performance was probably the highlight of the game, McGehee had a nice game, excellent defense, took a walk, was otherwise 1-for-3 and drove in a 2-out run while not accumulating any DPs or RISP failures. McGehee needs to string a good dozen of these games together.
