Game Wrap 5/27/2015: Giants 3 Brewers 1

Joe Panik hit a 2-run homer in the 5'th inning and that was all the offense Ryan Vogelsong and the Giants bullpen needed to secure a sweep of the BrewCrew and a happy flight home with a 5-2 road trip to brag about.  Key Lines:

Norichika Aoki- 2 for 5.  BA= .322.  Aoki went something like 9 for 13 for the series in his return to the city where he started his MLB career.  Was Aoki the most undervalued FA of this past offseason?

Joe Panik- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .297.  Panik is showing flashes of power to go with his high contact approach.  And what a 1-2 punch of on-base goodness at the top of the Giants lineup with him and Aoki!

Angel Pagan- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .310.  Bochy shook up a lineup that didn't seem to need shaking up, moving Pence into the 3 spot and moving Pagan down to the 7-hole.  Personally I like the a 3-7 of Pagan, Posey, Belt, Pence, Crawford, but Boch seems to have the pulse of the team at his fingertips.

Ryan Vogelsong- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.24.  Another stellar start for Vogey.  He is now 4-1 with a 2.66 ERA over his last 7 starts.

The Giants return home trailing the NL West leading Dodgers by 1.5 games pending the outcome of tonight's Dodgers-Braves contest.  The Giants lead the Mets by 1 game in the race for the first Wild Card playoff spot.

Chris Heston goes up against a red hot Shelby Miller in the opening game of the homestand and opening game of a 4 gamer against the surprisingly strong Braves.

  1. Back during the off season, I made a comment that I thought Aoki would prove to be a 'nice addition, who will come in handy over the course of the season', but I certainly didn't expect what we've gotten.
'Course, I also predicted that McGahee would be 'solid but not spectacular at third', so I doubt that the team will be offering me a scouting job anytime soon.

    1. Why not? And I'm not talking about Aoki's inflated numbers after this Milwaukee outburst, but his numbers in the weeks leading up to this resurgence has been in line with his career numbers. He gets on base slightly above .350+ and slugs in the high 300's, that's been his career, particularly the last two seasons, that's him this season.

I still think McGehee did himself no favors playing with that huge bruise on his leg into the latter part of April, he should have DLed after hurting his left knee instead of trying to gut it out. I think given time he will be "solid but not spectacularly at third", but whether Duffy will leave him any time is his problem going forward (and so far, Duffman just loves playing, day to day).

  2. I don't know if Aoki as the most under-rated signing, but I have to say it's worked out pretty well for the Giants. In fact, for all the crying and whinging about the Giants FA losses and acquisitions, the Giants have 'won' most of the swaps. Either by internal promotion (Duffy, Heston) or signing a FA (Aoki). So while McGehee didn't work out and Peavy has been on the DL for most of the season, and with both of them hurting us early in the year, we've survived and have the 4th best record in the NL.

Something many of the 'Hot Stove Winners,' like the Padres, can't say.

  3. This team's offense is shaping up better and deeper than last years. What a pick up Aoki has been(while Morse goes on the DL) and Panik is thumbing his nose at the Sophmore Slump. They have to write a movie about Vogey when he retires don't they??!! What a story he is.

  4. Dodgers lose 3-2 so the Giants are just 1 game back in the NL West standings.
