DrB's 2015 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #39 Chuckie Jones

Chuckie Jones, OF.  DOB:  7/28/1992.  B-R, T-R.  6'3", 235 lbs.

2014 High A:  .256/.326/.404, 19 2B, 4 3B, 15 HR, 17 SB, 8.8 BB%, 27.4%, 547 PA.

2015 will be Chuckie Jones' 6'th season in the Giants organization after being drafted out of a tiny HS in Missouri in 2010, 7'th round.  He was a project from the beginning, and his progress through the minors has indeed been slow, painfully slow at times.  His overall numbers from last year do not look too exciting, but he did improve as the season progressed.  From June 1 through the end of the season, he hit .278 with 15 2B, 2 3B, 12 HR, 14 SB in 314 AB.  He's always been able to draw walks at a good clip, but his K rate remains cripplingly high indicating that he may need to be more aggressive earlier in the count.  The question for 2015 is where does he get assigned?  The Giants minor league OF picture is getting crowded.  One thing to keep in mind is despite being in the organization seemingly forever, Jones is still just 22 yo, the age for most college draftees' first full season of pro ball.

  1. That's not too bad for any major college draftee to start his first season in AA, like Jones will be doing.

And last year's numbers at San Jose seem comparable to Ragira's and perhaps his post June 1 numbers resemble Mac Williamson's 2012 numbers somewhat???

In any case, I have always thought for a young prospect, all he needs is one good last season to graduate, when the game slows down enough or when some light turns on in his head.

So I look forward to seeing what he will do in 2015.

  2. So if this will be his 6th year with the org, what does that mean for Giants team control over his contract? He is not on the 40-man roster.

    1. I believe Chuckie Jones was eligible for the Rule 5 draft this year and the Giants did not protect him, probably because they correctly analyzed that he would not get drafted due a a low probability of being able to stick on a 25 man MLB roster. I think he will be a minor league FA next year. At some point the Giants will have to decide between putting him on the 40 man roster or risk losing him to another organization.

    1. OK, let's review the commenting rules one more time. The basic rule is the Jim Rome rule: Have a take, don't suck!

Comments throwing out random "ideas" about moving players to new positions without a shred of reasonable rationale to back it up do not make the grade.
