DrB's 2015 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #40 Stephen Johnson

Stephen Johnson, RHP.  DOB:  2/21/1991.  6'4", 205 lbs.

2014  High A:  7-4, 3.65, 69 IP, 4.70 BB/9, 10.04 K/9.

You may remember Stephen Johnson as the guy pitching for some god-forsaken DII school in Texas somewhere who hit 102 MPH on somebody's radar gun and suddenly he was the hot topic in BA and other draft scouting sites.  The Giants ended up drafting him along with several other high velocity bullpen arms in 2012.  Since then, he has quietly worked his way up the minor league chain.  The Giants have worked him in a middle relief role often logging multiple innings per appearance.  He has whittled his BB/9 down from the high 5's to the 4.70 you see here.  He'll need to get that down further. I would think he will pitch out of Richmond's bullpen in 2015.  I was not able to find any recent scouting reports on him.

  1. Conner Penfold has some video of 2014 spring training video of Johnson over at Giant Potential. I thought he had a little scouting report written about him at one point too, but I can't find it. He's got kind of a 3/4 slinging delivery with a 92-96 fastball and somewhat of a frisbee slider. Very funky look.
