Down on the Farm: 8/10/2014

AAA  Tacoma Rainiers edged the Fresno Grizzlies 2-1:

Chris Heston(RHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K's.
Taijaun Walker(RHP, Rainiers)- 7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, l3 K's.  ERA= 4.91.

Solid start for Heston, but Taijuan Walker shows why he is a top prospect.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Portland Sea Dogs 6-0:

Elliott Blair(CF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .429.
Blake Miller(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .296.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.32.
Steven Okert(LHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.04.
Hunter Strickland(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.43.

Blair and Miller seem to be making the transition from High A to AA with ease.

High A  Lancaster Jethawks defeated the San Jose Giants 6-2:

NTSH.

Low A  Savannah Sand Gnats beat the Augusta Greenjackets 6-4:

NTSH.  Game shortened to 7 innings by rain.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Hillsboro Hops 7-1:

Austin Slater(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .500.
Christian Arroyo(SS)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .320.
Aramis Garcia(Catcher)- 2 for 4.  BA= .333.
Ethan Miller(RHP)- 8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.79.

Ethan Miller is not a name that immediately comes to mind when making up a list of Giants pitching prospects, but he may be working his way up the ladder.  He's a big(6'5", 220 lb) RHP out of San Diego State.  He pitched briefly in Arizona after being drafted last summer.  This was his 5'th QS in a row, all of which have been on the dominant side.  In those 5 starts he has allowed just 5 runs in 34 IP for a 1.29 ERA with 26 K's against just 5 BB's with a modest GB tendency.

Rookie AZL  White Sox downed the Giants 5-4:

Matthew Gage(LHP)- 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.40.
Rayan Hernandez(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.18.

  1. Walker hasn't thrown a lot of innings this year, but have ever compared his #'s with Edwin Escobar's? About the same age. Try it. Interesting.

    1. Not saying that Escobar is not going to be a great pitcher or that Walker is, but comparable minor league numbers don't have a lot of meaning outside the context of a scouting report.

    2. Sooo....not interesting. Thanks. Escobar's stuff looks pretty darn good and he's got a strong body. Too bad he's gone. Your #2 preseason guy, Hembree, also. Too bad.

    3. I think I commented that Escobar/Hembree seemed like a steep price to pay for Peavy, but both pitchers have had disappointing seasons. I just wish that if Sabes was going to give them up for Peavy, he would have been willing to go all out and back it up with another acquisition or 2. As it is, it seems like he gave up a couple of promising young pitchers for pretty much nothing. Probably won't go down in history as one of Sabes' better trades.
