Down on the Farm: 7/31/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies stomped the Reno Aces 7-2:

Gary Brown(RF)- 1 for 4, BB, SB(23).  BA= .267.
Darren Ford(CF)- 3 for 5, 3B, SB(26).  BA= .306.
Chris Dominguez(SS-3B)- 2 for 4, HR(16).  BA= .270.
Kelvin Marte(LHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 10/2.  ERA= 1.29.

Brown gets passed over for a promotion again, this time by the guy drafted after him, Jarrett Parker, and from a lower level to boot.  As I've said before, I think Marte can be a MLB starter.

AA  Altoona Curve defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-5:

Angel Villalona(1B)- 1 for 2, BB, HBP. BA= .241.
Myles Schroder(2B-3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .240.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.48.
Phil McCormick(LHP)- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.02.

Crick was taken out with no outs in the second inning.  There was concern about an injury, possibly a blister, but no mention in the game recap on the Squirrels' website.

High A  Stockton Ports beat the San Jose Giants 5-3:

Mitch Delfino(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .284.
Elliott Blair(RF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .316.
Kendry Flores(RHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.12.

Low A  Kannapolis Intimidators outscored the Augusta Greenjackets 4-3:

Ty Ross(Catcher)- 2 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .248.
Luis Ysla(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.23.

If it seems like Ross has been hitting better, he has.  BA's:  May- .217, June- .254, July- .278.

Short Season  Tri-Cities Dust Devils topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-3 in 13 innings:

Seth Harrison(CF)- 1 for 4, 2 BB, SB(3).  BA= .250.
Christian Arroyo(SS)- 2 for 6.  BA= .316.
Shilo McCall(DH)- 1 for 4, 2B, 2 BB, SB(2).  BA= .213.
Nick Gonzalez(LHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.52.
EJ Encinosa(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.41.

Encinosa has had a strange pro career so far.  He's pitched pretty well when he's pitched, but that is a total of 49.1 IP, over his first 3 seasons with a month to go in this one.

AZL Giants blanked the Angels 1-0:

Angel Pagan(CF)- 2 for 3, 2 2B.  BA= .667.
Kevin Rivera(2B)- 2 for 3.  BA= .235.
Tyler Beede(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Matthew Gage(LHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.53.
Rayan Hernandez(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Angel Pagan gets in a game and gets 2 doubles.  Beede makes his pro debut and shows both good stuff and control issues in 1 inning.  Encouraging progress from Hernandez, one of last year's HS draftees.

DSL  Giants destroyed the Mariners 21-3:

Mikey Edie(CF, 17 yo)- 3 for 5, 2 BB.  BA= .320.
Jean Angomas(LF, 19 yo)- 2 for 7.  BA= .308.
Robinson Medrano(RF, 18 yo)- 1 for 4, 3B, 2 BB, HBP.  BA= .292.
Mecky Coronado(DH, 17 yo)- 1 for 4, 3B, BB, SF.  BA= .308.
Manuel Geraldo(SS, 17 yo)- 2 for 4, BB, SF.  BA= .232.
Robert Antunez(2B, 18 yo)- 1 for 4, 3B, 2 BB.  BA= .219.

Geraldo is hitting .333/.241/.500 over his last 10 games and .272 for the month of July.

Matt Cain does not have UCL damage and that was not a concern when he went to see Dr Andrews.  He has loose bodies in the elbow that cause inflammation which has not responded to a cortisone injection.  He and the Giants are considering options.  It sounds like an arthroscopy is inevitable, so might as well do it now and get a head start on the off-season to recover.

  1. Can anybody tell me how well DOMINGUEZ is playing in the filed at the short stop position? Can he be competent in the MLs or is it just a fill in for Fresno?

Very encouraging starts for MARTE, FLORES and YSLA (who is very consistent and may have the best ERA in the SAL)

There were also comments somewhere in the twitterverse last night regarding MATT GAGE's performance..Supposeley was hitting hhis fastball at 90-91 but was also effectively throwin his curve, slide and change after replacing BEDEDEE...

  2. Where are you getting your information that Duffy and Parker have been called up? No official transactions have been posted and nobody else is reporting this. It this is true you've got scoop!!!

    1. This is true. Duffy packed up and left RVA yesterday. Nary a piece of Matt Duffy's underwear left in Richmond, VA. He gone! I assume Parker did the same. Can't tell you why nothing has been said yet. But rest assured the "Duff Man" is no longer a Richmond Flying Squirrel.

    5. Wow, farm equipment moving all over the place! Maybe these really aren't temporary moves? Hopefully Parker will at least get to play in Fresno if he is sent back down for Belt. Good luck to Blake Miller in Richmond. I really like that guy. Horan looks like someone who could bash 35 HR in a full Cal League season.

  3. Via Twitter: Giants also purchased the contracts of Matt Duffy and Jarrett Parker from double-A Richmond.

  4. Very exciting! Things like this make me feel less horrible about the play of the Giants. I am so glad that we did not make any big splashes and lose players such as Duffy. I still think we have some players who can move up in the next few years. If either Duffy or Panik can stick at 2B then that is one less concern we have going into the offseason. I don't think we have any pitchers who could fill in Vogelsong's spot next season but Blach, Blackburn and Crick could be in Fresno. I think we will have to get a starter in free agency, waiver period coming up or a trade in the winter. Who knows what will happen with Pablo. I think the Giants will budge and sign him to a high annual 4 year deal. We will have to wait and see.

  5. Beede may have had control problems, but since the two walks were of the other team's first two batters, after which he settled down and struck out two of three, I'm guessing that the walks were just a matter of nerves.

    1. Possibly. It's the big thing to watch going forward.

  6. According to TWITTER, DUFFY starting tonight, playing 2nd and batting 2nd....Excited to see the kid....

OTOH, JC Perez in the starting lineup...Hard to win a game when your 6-9 is Blanco, Perez, Crawford and Vogie..

    1. I agree. I know they are facing a lefty, so it would not be Parker, but I would rather see Susac back at catcher with Posey at 1B and Morse in LF. That looks like a longer lineup to me than with Blanco and Perez as 2 of the 3 OF's.

  7. Will the Giants ever give Gary Brown a shot in the bigs? His confidence HAS to be lower than ever before...being passed over again...and again...and again....and again.

    1. The question should really be "Will Gary Brown eve do anything that merits him a shot at the BIgs?" IMO, he has yet to earn it...At least Parker has been on fire the last 10 games or so and is LH bat that might come in handy off the bench....No big deal really, as soon as Belt is ready he goes back to RIC
