Alex Wood LHP gave up a two-run HR with 2 outs in the 6'th inning on his 93'rd and last pitch of the game. The Giants struggling offense could not overcome the 3-1 deficit.
Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 3, HR(8), BB. BA= .256. Longo is hitting .435 over his last 7 games and is really the only hot hitter in the Giants lineup right now.

With the loss, the Giants go 2-3 at home against the worst team in the NL and the third worst in the AL. They sit 1 game behind in the NL Wild Card race.

The Giants get another home day off before starting a weekend series against a so far disappointing White Sox team with Alex Cobb RHP facing Lance Lynn RHP on Orange Friday.
Hoping that if Aaron Judge becomes a free agent this winter, the Giants will try to sign him as hard as they did with Bryce Harper. He has already turned down a 7 yr $213 mil contract from the Yanks. He is the slugger they need to spark the offense, he's a box office draw, and he's from northern California. I've liked him since his days at Fresno St. He's a right fielder but notice he's playing center field this year as well. Go Giants!
ReplyDeleteAaron Judge would be the ultimate RH bat, woudn't he? He does have a fairly significant injury history but has been mostly healthy the last two seasons.
DeleteJudge's new contract will be for ages 31-??? 7 years? Until he's 38? Is he Barry Bonds?
ReplyDeleteHarper's 29 now (!) in the 4th year of his contract.
Judge has had ONE injury free year.
FZ is not that stupid!
Shouldn't have "that" in the last sentence:
DeleteFZ is not stupid.
Judge turned down $30M/year. He might do better, but, unless the Payer builds a Full team around the Payee, they'll have Trout and the Angels.
There is only 1 Barry Bonds. Harper has 9 years remaining on a 13 year contract. If you want to sign the player, gotta be willing to overpay. Judge's name was brought up since he is a star player who is from northern California and reportedly grew up a Giants fan. Maybe this would improve their chances of signing him? They've been coming up short on a lot of their free agent hitter pursuits. I think part of it has to do with their home ballpark being a pitcher friendly ballpark.
DeleteThe ballpark definitely seems to be a factor with a lot of free agent hitters. There have been a couple of cases where FZ seems to have a hard ceiling on how high he is willing to bid and there is always one team that's willing to go higher. If you want to sign a franchise player, you have to be prepared to pay whatever price it takes and you have to be willing to let the back end of the contract become a future sunk cost. It's understandable that owner/management would not want to put themselves in that position. FZ proved last year it's possible to build a team with the best record in MLB without that type of contract but this season is raising the question of if it's sustainable or a once-in-a-generation fluke.
DeleteIt may have been a fluke, which reminded me of a tweet from Schulman a couple years ago that the Dodgers had something like $30 mil payroll commits for the following year and still had a great team. According to Cots contracts, the dodgers had a payroll of $94 mil to start 2020 season. I was envious reading that. Their roster consisted of players they claimed off waivers like Chris Taylor and Max Muncy, but they were able to supplement the roster with homegrown talent like Cory Seager, clay bellinger and Julio Urias. It may be possible to have a strong roster without star contracts, but it's probably the exception not the rule, not easy to do. I see some similarities with how FZ is trying to build the Giants roster. What's missing is help from the farm system right now. Bart and Ramos are not ready, but they have good prospects like Kyle Harrison and RJ Davovich who could help them soon as well.
