Game Wrap 5/8/2023: Nationals 5 Giants 1

Anthony DeSclafani RHP got BABIP'd for 5 runs in the first inning before settling down to pitch 6 more shutout innings.  Unfortunately a solo HR by Joc Pederson DH in the 9'th inning was way too little, too late.

Logan Webb RHP tries to even the series tomorrow evening against Patrick Corbin LHP.

Churn Watch

Bryce Johnson CF was activated from his rehab assignment and optioned to AAA Sacramento.

  1. FWIW department:
The Giants are now 1-2 when opponent scores 5 runs.
At every opposition run level, from 5 up, Giants have a losing record.
That's more than half their games (18), in which they are 2-16.
Their best RBI guy (Davis) is tied for 20th.
Their next (Pederson) is tied for 37th.
Joey Bart has 2 RBIs, 2 behind Austin Winns who has only played in 8 games for 3 teams.
Correa (Giants offered $350M) is batting .197 and has 15 RBIs (would be 3rd on the Giants).
Judge (signed $360M) has 14, tied with Estrada.

    1. They are 11th in wRC+ so more runs should come. But this team is gonna succeed or fail on the strength of their pitching. I expect their offense to hover around the #8-12 area for most of the year.

  2. As we near the quarter mark of the season, it's time to take stock and make some moves. I understand Schmitt is being promoted to SF and perhaps soon, Harrison.

Still hoping for consistent playing time for Bart, who has not played in the last 2 games, I think, which we both lost. Hopefully he is not injured, or is just nursing some minor injury.

Giants Select Casey Schmitt, Designate Darin Ruf For Assignment

Suddenly this Nationals series just got a whole lot more interesting... I hope the kid excels! That'd be a huge win for the Giants (both the team and this front office) even if he is just a league average hitter who can provide solid defense at SS once Craw is gone for good.

I mean, he can't be worse than Wisely, right?

    ...Right?

    1. Wisely shouldn't be sold too short. Until his birthday yesterday, he was still 23 yo, the youngest Giant, and still the youngest after 24-year old Schmitt was called up today.
After an inauspicious start, hitless through 5 games, 1 hit through 12 games, batting .043, Wisely is 5-13 (.385 BA) with a double and HR, 3 RBIs, a couple SBs, and positive defense.
Until this year Wisely was an infielder with 3 games in LF last year. He played 5 games with Sacramento in CF before being called up. He has 200+ games combined in all 4 infield positions.
Drafted in the 15th Round in 2019 from Gulf Coast State JC in West Florida, the 458th overall pick, then sitting out the 2020 Covid year, he advanced to Tampa Bay's AAA team in 2022, 3.5 years below the average age.
The Giants were lucky to get him because Tampa Bay had a roster crunch and didn't want to leave Wisely unprotected.
With YtY on the IL, it's nice to have someone who can play CF.

  4. Wasn't all that BABIP. At least three of those hits were line drives and those grounders were well hit and at least two of them show the range issues we have with our defense. And it could have been worse but for the base running error on Washington.

And you look at our defense. The numbers are pretty bad. Errors. Lack of range. There are few bright spots. Yaz gets great jumps has a very strong arm and throws those hits back to the cut-off man faster than average. But he's doesn't have CF range and hasn't made a 4-star (25% to 50% probability catch in years. JD Davis is playing remarkably well and carrying the water for the defense with +5 OAA and +2 DRS at 3B. Estrada is good at 2B (though bad at SS). Johnson shined in his brief appearance.

Anyway... I'm not expecting anything for this season. It's a pretty flawed team. Not as bad as many of the 1970s/early-80s chronically bad teams or some of the recent stinker teams, like 2017. But it's not that good of a team and break-even is about the best I think this team can do.

    1. Sure it's a flawed team, but which team isn't?

      11th in wRC+
3rd in xFIP; 7th in starter ERA
6th in OAA; 7th in RAA

Seems like a pretty solid wild card contender to me.

  5. Just heard on the radio today that Conforto has a .330 average with 5 bombs against Patrick Corbin in his career. He isn’t in the starting lineup. I get it that he bats lefty and has sucked lately but could have been a nice slump buster for the guy they signed when they backed out of the Correa deal. Guess the nerds know best since they’ve done such a good job of building this team and putting together all the winning lineups this year! Can’t wait to see Schmidt and his wet newspaper for a bat cream singles all over the infield.

    4. I, for one, want to commend the wet newspaper guy for jumpstarting Schmitt's career! Thank you.
