Game Wrap 5/21/2023: Giants 7 Marlins 5

Patrick Bailey hit is first MLB HR and Ryan Walker was credited with his first MLB Win to lead the Giants to a series win.  Key Lines:

Thairo Estrada 2B- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .309.  Batting Wilmer Flores 1B and Thairo 1, 2 in the lineup didn't work out as hoped as they both struck out to start the first inning but Thairo doubled later in the game to drive in a run and eventually score one.

J. D. Davis DH- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(8), BB.  BA= .288.  Davis has cooled off some from April but can still put a charge in the ball, especially against LHP's.

Mitch Haniger LF- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .211.  Haniger is 6 for 20 over his last 6 games.

Casey Schmitt 3B- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .383.  Schmitt stays hot.

Patrick Bailey C- 1 for 3, HR(1), Sac.  BA= .333.  The HR went deep into the LF bleachers.  He added a squeeze bunt to drive in another run later in the game.  Look like a veteran behind the plate.

Alex Wood LHP- 4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.05.  I don't have the data but it looked like the home plate ump was squeezing everybody in this game which may account for some of the scoring.  By contrast, Hunter Wendelstedt was calling pitches strikes that were at least 4 inches off the plate in yesterday's game.

Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Walker has an extreme crossover step but still unleashes a high-90's FB and looks like he can put it on the corners.  The ump might have squeezed him the most of any of today's pitchers.  I guess not surprising since he's a rook.  He's got a tight slurvy looking slider to back it up.  That combo should play.  The two hits he gave up in the 6'th inning were of the infield variety.  The single to lead off the 7'th was a punch to LF by light-hitting Xavier Edwards. Giants may have found themselves a nice bullpen arm.

Jakob Junis RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.50.  Junis came into the game in the 7'th with a runner on and no-outs.  He promptly got a GIDP and completed 2 shutdown innings.  He's now pitched 4 scoreless innings in his last 3 appearances.

Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(12).  ERA= 2.08.  After recording just 3 Saves in April, Doval has run off  9 this month in 9 opportunities.  He's allowed just 1 ER in 10.2 IP this month.  Doval is on a pace to make 77 appearances on the season.  Not terrible but probably needs to dial back a bit but that should come with the normal ebb and flow of the season. Hopefully the Giants can find 1 or 2 guys who can serve as reliable back up Closers.

The Giants head to Minnesota without the benefit of a travel day.  John Brebbia RHP opens the series as an Opener facing 6' 9" Bailey Ober RHP.

  1. Heard a surprising stat that this was JD's first HR off a left hander this year. And I am ready for automated balls and strikes. Whether a guy is a rookie or not should make no difference in if its a ball or a strike and I hate seeing good pitching performances being ruined by bad umpiring. Giants do seem to be finding their stride and the rookies are contributing, which is great to see.

  2. Bailey looks good behind the plate. I think a decent showing (~.700 OPS) with the bat could force a Bart trade but that could be asking for too much from Bailey right now. What’s happened to Barts power anyhow?

Also, was both the games this weekend and the crowd is treating Schmitt like a homegrown star. Loved seeing it.

    1. What happened to Bart's power? He doesn't elevate the ball. When he hits the ball hard, it's on the ground or a line drive that finds too many IF gloves. Elevating the ball does not appear to be a problem for Patrick Bailey.

  3. I didn't like Dovall pitching down a run on Saturday. Keep him to save opportunities with how often they have used him, even going 4+ outs at times

  4. "squeezed him the most - not surprising since he's a rook"
Infuriating. That umps get away with this is an insult to the game, and it'll be a joyous day when ABS eliminates this from ever happening again.

Imagine an NBA ref who makes rookies swish every basket.
Or an NFL ref who makes rookies get 4 yards on 3rd and 1.

Until this eliminated forever, make them wear a taser jock or an earpiece that sends a bring-em-to-their-knees screech into their brain every time they pull this crap.

Rant over - switching to decaf....

    1. There's a Twitter site that posts umpire scorecards for every game(I don't think they are the official MLB scorecards). Turns out Hunter Wendelstedt's calls in the 1-0 loss favored the Giants by 0.68 runs so maybe I shouldn't complain. On the other hand, there was at least one call that was on an Eric Gregg level where the ball was at least 4 full inches off the plate. I just remember thinking to myself "this guy is untouchable because of his name and he knows it." Probably an unfair fan kneejerk reaction but that's exactly what crossed my mind at the time. I'll watch for the scorecard from this game. I don't think they break it down into different pitchers during the game but they do list the 3 most egregious blown calls.

  5. Giants are 16th in attendance this year. They are officially in the bottom half of attendance due to the product Farhan has put on the field. He should be fired for that alone, not counting the fact that he has one winning season in 4 plus years and has ran the franchise into the ground.

    1. Ha! Our daily Fire Farhan comment. Look, short of massive spending in the free agent market, rebuilds/turnarounds at the MLB level generally take at least 5 years. Accounting for a completely lost year of development in 2020 and looking at young players hitting the MLB level like Schmitt and Bailey and likely Matos and Harrison in the near future, I'm willing to give Farhan another year or two. In addition, I still think it's way too early to write off this season.

    2. Giants are 1 game below .500 and 2 games out of the playoffs.
On May 14th they were 17-23.
Have you been asleep for the last 10 days?

  6. Anyone notice that former Giants prospect and player Steven Okert is doing very well with the Marlins the last 3 years?? Just proud to see him doing good. Lefty reliever with under a 3 era the last 3 years for them.

    1. Happy for Okert. There is no substitute for MLB experience.
