Game Wrap 5/10/2023: Nationals 11 Giants 6

Sean Manaea got blown out of this one early and a plucky Giants offense couldn't catch up.  Key Lines:

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B= 1 for 4, HR(7), BB.  BA= .260.  Wade's 2-run HR came in the 9'th inning when the game was out of reach, but he's on a pace to hit 25-30 on the season.  He also drove in a run with a ground out.

J. D. Davis 3B- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .287.  Not a bad line but Davis' error in the third inning opened the floodgates for 4 unearned runs and it just goes to show how much it's a game of inches....or less.  With one out and one on, as Davis was fielding a routine chopper, the ball inexplicably just dropped out of his glove.  He picked it up and fired to first where the ump called the runner safe.  Instant replay upheld the call but it was so, so close!  The next batter lined out for out #2 then walk, single, triple and suddenly the score was 8-0 and the Giants never recovered.

Michael Conforto RF- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .171.  Conforto's 2-run HR came in the 8'th inning.  Giants desperately need his bat to come alive.  Hopefully this is a start?

Casey Schmitt SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .500.   The good vibes continue for Casey "At the Bat" Schmitt.  May this be the beginning of a long, glorious career.

Sean Manaea LHP- 2.2 IP, 5 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 7.96.  Earned runs or not, this was already not a good start for Manaea long before Davis' error.  That error was was something a good pitcher should have had not trouble pitching out of.  At this point it's hard to see Manaea being used in anything but mop-up situations until he shows he can consistently get hitters out.

Tristan Beck RHP- 5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.41.  Nice bulk-innings work for Beck.  I would look for him to switch roles with Manaea next turn through the rotation. Gotta think Kyle Harrison LHP chance is coming soon.

The Giants open a 4-game series in Arizona tomorrow evening with Alex Cobb RHP facing Tommy Henry LHP.

Austin Slater CF left the game early with left hamstring tightness, the same area that caused him to start the season on the IL.  He'll be evaluated tomorrow.

  1. tristan beck has put himself in line for a spot start if alex wood isn't ready when his spot in the rotation comes up. at $25m it may be a little early to DFA him but, i wouldn't be shocked if he's stashed on the IL for awhile.

  2. Davis is trying to make me a liar after I pumped him up yesterday, despite his throwing error. Two errors in two days gives him three for the season, dragging some of his defensive metrics to average though he's still doing well overall.

Manaea is giving me 'live by the churn, die by the churn' vibes.

Since the bullpen settled down and Webb got on track, the OF is what's bothering me the most. So, right now, it's to the point I'd like to see Conforto get a reduced role and move Wade in LF and put Flores at 1B. Wade may be poor at OF defense, but there are only three people on the Giants that can play OF, are healthy and are hitting - Yaz, Wade & Sabol. And since there are no good defensive OFers (except for Yaz on the corners) on the team, there's no point in considering offense/defense trade-offs.

  3. I am not sure i understand the post above. According to Baseball Reference, Alex Wood is signed through this year (2023) at $12.5 million. Although he has only 10 innings pitched, his ERA is 1.80.

    1. I think he's referring to Manaea about the $25 mil

  4. Getting really hard to watch – OTOH, getting blown out early means turning to more interesting things.
If you want to watch interesting baseball, MLB.TV has a lot of options, there's always an entertaining game and occasionally the Dodgers get blown out although they are 10-2 lately.
With just a one-game lead over the Rockies, SF's 4 in AZ while Colorado (8-2 last 10) hosts the Phillies for 3 portends a bad ending to this weekend – will last place sit well with the dwindling fan base?
Just 21,000 last night for that debacle. Excepting the Covid years, SF is heading for the worst attendance since they built the "new" park.
