Logan Webb once again pitched like an ace and once again it wasn't enough as the offense failed to mount so much as a serious threat against Braxton Garrett LHP and 3 Marlins relievers. Key Lines:
Logan Webb 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 8/0. ERA= 2.91.
The Giants managed just 3 hits and a walk. Two of those hits were by Patrick Bailey C and Bryce Johnson CF at the bottom of the lineup with Bailey's being his first MLB knock.
My only other comment is I might have left Jakob Junis RHP in for at least 1 more inning in tie ballgame rather than going to Tyler Rogers RHP in the 8'th the day after he worked 1.1 IP the night before. But this game is on the hitters.
Alex Wood LHP tries for a series win tomorrow against Jesus Luzardo LHP.
And remember Thomas Szapucki LHP? He underwent thoracic outlet surgery.
You cannot win without scoring!
ReplyDeleteThat was pathetic.
Love Estrada, but he hits best with no runners. He left 2 today, more than any other Giant.
For the season, he has 54 hits, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 6 homers, 16 RBIs, and 77 LOB!
5 of his 6 HRs have come with the bases empty, the other with a runner on 1st.
He doesn't hit with runners on base! Period!
Although he's good at hitting (7th in all of MLB, qualified), getting on base (46th in MLB), and even HRs (78th in MLB), his RBI's are tied for 149th (in MLB) although he's had many many runners on base.
He's .364/.364/.636/1.000 leading off a game. No walks!
He's batting .235 with RISP, .225 with men on, .374 bases empty.
Contrast Wade: .423 with RISP, and .517 OBP leading off a game, so can't put Estrada there. But behind Wade is worse.
The RISP stuff is supposed to regress to mean over time, and they could try batting Estrada first with LMWJ batting #2.
Delete...but none of that matters if the #3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 spots go 0 fer. Yes, that was pathetic.
DeleteAmen
DeleteMaybe Estrada will get better - not press as much with time and experience? Perhaps he just puts pressure on himself with runners out there he wants so hard to move.
DeleteIsn't a pitcher supposed to be a little less effective with runners to distract him?
Can someone explain to me why Flores is leading off today?
DeleteAgreed, I wish Kap left Junis in to pitch the 8th inning, to give the short relievers a break, and let Tyler Rogers pitch the 9th inning instead of Doval. I don't like to see the closer pitching the 9th inning when his team is losing unless he needed the work Doval saved 3 straight games earlier in the week against the Phil's. I thought they were going to watch Dovals usage this year. He's appeared in 21 out of 45 games.
ReplyDeleteThere is a theory about keeping a 1-run game close going into bot-9, but Giants do have some reliable RPs, so agreed: don't over work the Ace for nothing. Had it been tied, maybe, but why would a pathetic hitting performance change after 8 futile fruitless innings?
DeleteHey, losing 1-0 isn’t the worst thing that could’ve happened. I didn’t see it, but apparently JD flubbed a routine grounder at a critical time. That seems more like an outlier given his otherwise strong defensive play this season. Even if his defense proves not ready for prime time over the longer run, the Giants have Schmitt, who’s best position is probably third base. And Bailey got his first big league hit. We might see a real battle brewing here with Bart, something the Giants haven’t shied away from this season. This team finally seems to be evolving, doesn’t it? Susan Slusser on KNBR the other day said all signs are pointing to Harrison’s lack of going more than a few innings at a time in the minors is about trying to make sure he’s fresh when he makes it to the majors and less about concerns about his control issues.
ReplyDeleteLosing 1-0 is always the worst. What a waste of a great pitching performance and a turn through the rotation by your ace.
DeleteLosing 1-0 is like getting the vaccine then Covid anyway
DeleteOn a positive note on this game, Patrick Bailey's debut seems like a success. He collected his 1st MLB hit and received nice compliments from Logan Webb. Pretty cool stuff. It's a small sample size, but the Giants might have a nice problem splitting playing time with young catchers Bart, Bailey, and Sabol in the future. Maybe they can trade one of them in the future to fill other needs.
ReplyDeleteDo you think any of those C's mentioned could bring a good SP prospect or a major league SP better than Manaea/Stripling with at least 3-4 years of control?
DeleteThis team, which isn't really bad, just not really good, will get better as the year progresses. Mostly it's young, lots of control, stuff coming from below AAA (that's a very bad team!), but AA & A+ (Farhan guys) have potential where it is needed: C, OF, pitching and the ever quixotic Marco...
Flores leading off (?), batting in front of Estrada!
ReplyDeleteObviously, the "brains" don't know that's a bad idea.
But, didn't matter as they both whiff.
