  1. Any chance instead of keeping most of his assets as deadline this year chasing a wild card spot with a .500 baseball team, instead Farhan flips the suddenly valuable Alex Cobb for another talented young arm, and the Giants open up 2024 with a trio of young studs?

    1. I would say that scenario is becoming less likely by the day as the Giants climb back into the wild card race, although Farhan has never been a strict seller/buyer at the deadline. I could see him trading a veteran SP for the right return if, say, Kyle Harrison busts down the door to the big leagues as it looks like he is doing before our eyes.

    2. ....and BTW, right now the Giants are better than a .500 team. They are 12-8 in the month of May.

    3. ...aaand they are 18-11 since a 6-13 start.

    4. ....and if Harrison does force/enable trading a veteran pitcher, I'm pretty sure it won't be Alex Cobb. On the other hand, if they do another faceplant and are clearly out of the race by the deadline, Cobb could bring a nice prospect haul in return.

    5. Telll that to the Phillies fans who wanted that team blown up before the All-star break. With the pitching the Giants have, if you get in, you have a chance.

  2. Other than for Tyler Fitzgerald, aged 25, who's having a breakout season in Sacramento (he's presently injured and not playing), the two top younger shortstop prospects in the organization appear to be Arteaga aged 20, in Eugene, and Diego Velasquez, aged 19, in San Jose.
If their listed weights are to believed, they're slight of build at 170 and 150 pounds respectively. Surprisingly, both have shown some thump in their bats, especially Arteaga, who had 14 homers in San Jose last season and 5 so far in High-A. Velasquez, who I think was the top Giants signee in his international class, has 2 homers, but is now hitting .326 after tonight's game. He's been nothing but consistent and rotating with Jose Ramos at the position. Ramos' batting average has fallen off after a good start, whereas Velasquez's has been steadily rising.
Arteaga, known for his defense, had a solid year offensively in San Jose at age 19, but in the early going this year with the Emeralds, his BA has been hovering around .200.

Two other interesting shortstop prospects who are expected to make their season debuts when the ACL begins play in June are Anthony Rodriguez, who like Velasquez is a switch-hitter, and Javier Francisco, who was signed to some fanfare because he was compared to Francisco Tatis, Jr. by Tatis' father, with whom he trained.

    1. Arteaga seems to be following the Luis Matos trajectory. The jump from A to A+ must be pretty big for young players. We'll see if Arteaga can bounce back like Matos in AA next year.

    2. This season’s still young. Bet on an Arteaga bounce as summer approaches.

  3. Cobb is exactly the kind of SP you GET.
    Not get rid of.

  4. Is Kyle Harrison going to be a closer? Bulk inning guy? How’s he supposed to be a starter if he’s only going 3-4 inning a game and walking more than 1 batted an inning? Yeah he strikes out a lot of people and doesn’t allow much hits but how is this supposed to play in the majors?? I know he’s on a pitch limit in AAA but how does that help him build up stamina?? How does that help prepare him for the rigors of the major leagues?? All the pitch count is doing is protecting him from injury. Will he be on a pitch count in the majors and only be a 3-4 inning starter??? Is that becoming the new norm now that there’s a 26 man roster??

“Zaidi: Giants to increase Kyle Harrison’s pitch count after strong Triple-A start”

You think Farhan ever reads the comments here?

    2. I know for sure that someone who works with the San Jose Giants reads my blog regularly because they came up before a game and introduced themselves. Beyond that, I can't prove anything but I am aware of circumstantial evidence that people on the organization read the blog and have acted on it a few times.
