Game Wrap 5/9/2023: Giants 4 Nationals 1

Casey Schmitt joined a long list of Giants who homered in their first MLB game and the Giants cruised to an otherwise drama-free win behind Logan Webb.  Key Lines:

Mitch Haniger RF/LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .227.  Haniger got Webb an early lead with a 2-run double in the first inning.

Casey Schmitt SS- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .500.  What a great moment for a "homegrown" prospect!  MLB debut, home ballpark, approximately 40 friends and family in attendance.  Doesn't get much better than that.  He started a GIDP to boot.  Brandon Crawford might have just gotten Wally Pipped!

Logan Webb RHP- 7 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 9/2.  ERA= 3.46.  Webb seems to be settling into the season right on schedule.  4 consecutive QS with an ERA in that span of 2.22.

Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 2.30.  Dominant Save.  That's how we like them.

Sean Manaea LHP goes for the series win tomorrow afternoon against Josiah Gray RHP.

Churn Watch:

Darin Ruf UT was DFA'd to make room on the 40-man roster for Casey Schmitt and Cal Stevenson OF was optioned to AAA Sacramento.

  1. "hold on dad, do not drop that kid"! Was a great call by Duane Kuiper on Casey Schmidt's home run! Great stuff doing it in front of 60 family and friends.

  2. It will be interesting to see the Giants starting lineup barring any more injuries.
    Stop the churn
The way I see it, without worrying about batting order:
    C- Bart, Sabol platoon
    1B-LW Jr., Wilmer platoon
    2B-Thairo
    SS-Craw and Casey Schmidt platoon
    3B-JD Davis
    OF-Conforto, Haniger, Slater, Yaz mix
    Stop the churn-send Wisely
DH-Joc, Wilmer (Joc should start against some lefties, I believe he would hit better by being in the lineup more often).
Not sure what to do with Villar. I think some time in Sacramento might help.
Try to keep 13 pitchers on the team
Stop the churn...did I say that enough? I want to go to the ballpark and watch mlb ready players.

    1. Once in a while churning is OK.

When it gets too often, I think stability comes into consideration.

For example, I see JD Davis is playing 3B almost all the time. I see that as helping him. Can you imaging if he has to deal with playing at other positions as well, like 1B or maybe even 2B or OF?

Of course, if you put JD Davis at 2B, that means you could possibly put Thairo at CF or DH (or SS when Schmitt is taking a day off), and add another slugger at 3B in place of Davis.

But I think it has helped Davis to stay at 3B almost all the time.

Sometimes, the simplest explanation or positioning of defenders is the best. Kind of like Occam's razor. I read graceful can be defined as without wasted motion. If so, simple can be beautiful and graceful as well.

So, I am for reducing excessive churning.

  3. Stop the churn! Because I want to see MLB-ready players like Blake Sabol, LWJ, Thairo, and Yaz! What is that you say? Oh, how were these guys acquired? Oh, I see. Well, I DON'T CARE! Stop the churn of guys I don't like and churn of guys I like.

    1. The problem with the churn is the 100+ games filled by guys who shouldn't be on your roster and delaying the development of young talent as you sift through 20 buckets of crap in the hopes that one pearl. Worse, many of them were already labeled 'just bucket of crap' by many teams and yet Zaidi had to just dig into that bucket again - Tyler Austin, Aaron Altherr, Abital Avelino, Zach Green, Corban Joseph, Christhian Adames, Mike Gerber which is about one-third of one year's churn!

In 2019 we had 64 players who played in at least one game. Many of whom had failed with at least one other team. In 2022 we had 66! SIXTY SIX!!!! Many of whom had already failed with one, or more, teams!

The churn has become a problem, and pointing it out is a fan prerogative. We're not lap-dogs to get whipped into line and unquestionably support everything Ziadi or ownership does. So rethink your argument, but this time don't do it with a strawman while ignoring the costs, disruptions and failures.

    2. So remind me how many at bats did those churn guys you just listed get? I'm going to guess it's less than 30. And whose development did they churn delay? And can you name me one team who doesn't have to fill games, at bats, injuries with AAA/AAAA players? So is your point that you'd rather have Bryce Johnson, Ricardco Genoves, Brett Auerbach, and Heliot Ramos on the team rather than Blake Sabol, LWJ, Thairo, and Yaz? And if not, then how do you suppose you go about finding these guys? Your entire posts listing all those guys who had almost zero impact on anything seems like the strawman to me.

  4. That was a hell of a HR last night by Schmitt, especially in his very first MLB game. So congrats to Schmitt, that sort of thing is pretty rare.

I swear Webb was trying to recreate torture-ball last night. But he did what he needed to do and survived. I was just surprised that he lasted 7. Kuiper's like 'you want to be out of the third with 45 pitches' and Webb as at 53 with no outs and two men on.

The defense actually played pretty well last night. Something that has been very spotty and lack-luster for most of the season, with the only real blemish an error by Davis.

Speaking of Davis, despite the error, he's been playing GG level defense ever since the Giants fixed his fielding problems. Giants bench coach (Correa) made a huge number of changes to how plays defense and we now have a guy who could always hit, but was such an error machine for the Mets the benched him and then traded him. He's now playing the best ball of his life and is one of the top-rated defensive 3B in the majors. So good on Davis for being coachable and Correa for coaching him up.

  5. Wally Pipp was 32 yo when "replaced" (headache) and was in the 13th year of his career after 1500 games (includes 12 with Detroit before NY). NY lost in his last game (to Walter Johnson) to be 15-26 in 7th place and won the next day. He retired 3 years later with bWAR of 31.7

Brandon Crawford is 36 yo on the IL (right calf strain) in the 13th year of career. He currently has a bWAR of 30.2 after 1583 games. Giants lost in his "last" game and won in Schmitt's first game.

Estrada played SS for 8 games between Crawford's injury and Schmitt's playing yesterday.

SF played Washington the day before and the day Schmitt played, losing the first and winning the 2nd.
NY played Washington the day before and the day Gehrig played, losing the first and winning the 2nd.
