The Giants twice overcame two 2-run leads by the Brewers and the bullpen held the BrewCrew scoreless over the final 4 innings to preserve the win. Key Line:
Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 0 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .250. OBP= .444. LMWJ's OBP on the season over 110 PA is more than .100 higher than his career average. Is this a new sustained skill or will he regress to career averages? His first walk in this game led to the Giants first run ahead of J. D. Davis' HR in the first inning. He now has 7 BB and 3 H while leading off 20 games for a .500 OBP as the first Giants batter of the game.
J. D. Davis 3B- 1 for 3, HR(7), BB. BA= .280. After the Brewers scored 2 runs in the top of the first inning, Davis quickly got the Giants back even in the bottom of the inning with a 2-run opposite-field blast off the green metal facing of the RF arcade. His 7 HR's leads the Giants by 1 over LMWJ and Wilmer Flores. He has hit 15 HR in 263 PA since joining the Giants from the Mets in the deadline trade for Darin Ruf last season. It appears that he has locked down the everyday starting 3B role for 2023. His contract is under team control through 2024. He is a player FZ might want to consider offering a longterm extension to.
Joc Pederson DH- 1 for 3. BA= .254. Joc hit a hard GB single up the middle to drive in 2 runs in the pivotal 5'th inning. He got thrown out trying for 2B but the 2 RBI's gave the Giants their first lead of the game which they did not give up. When it was Joc's turn to hit against a sidearming lefty in the 8'th inning, Kap stuck with his much-criticized strategy of PH to get a favorable L-R matchup. Wilmer Flores made it pay off by adding an insurance run on his 6'th HR of the season.
Joey Bart C- 0 for 4. BA= .277. Bart had a mixed game. His throwing error in the first inning led to a Brewers run but he also once-again alertly called timeout to save Camilo Doval a pitch-clock violation in the 9'th.
Brett Wisely 2B- 1 for 3, BB, 2 SB(2). BA= .074. Wisely has struggled at the plate but his single and SB started the 3-run rally in the 5'th inning.
Sean Manaea LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 7.33. Manaea pitched better than the line looks and was fortunate the offense picked him up. Baby steps but an encouraging start for the big lefty.
Bullpen- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. Tyler Rogers RHP deserves particular note for 2 shutout IP to get the game to Camilo Doval RHP in the 9'th inning for his 6'th Save of the season.
Alex Cobb RHP tries to extend the Giants win streak to 4 games today facing Colin Rea RHP in a late-afternoon game.
Happy 92'nd birthday to Giants legend Willie Mays.
Note for anyone out there who is still mad at FZ for letting Carlos Rodon LHP sign with the Yankees: Rodon's return from the IL has been pushed back indefinitely with his announcement that his back condition is chronic and may be related to his pitching mechanics. He is hoping a cortisone injection will allow a return to the mound. Reminder that a forearm strain was the injury that caused him to open the season on the IL.
Rodon was a huge risk that Z nailed. If anyone thinks Giants' fans are angry, go see how NYY (and StL!) are feeling.
ReplyDeleteRodon was always a huge risk.

Rodon has been injured a few times before.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we knew beforehand that it would be, probability wise, a relatively healthy year for him when we signed in for the 2022 season, or maybe we got lucky.
There is a Dec. 14, 2022 MSN article (Giants Still In On Carlos Rodon) which begins with 'It sounds as if the San Francisco Giants are still trying to bring back left hander, Carlos Rodon, even after signing starting pitchers Sean Manaea and Ross Striping this week..."
I don't know how accurate that 'it sounds as if' is. The original source was Rotoballer staff on Dec. 13, 2022. Perhaps it's like that trade (may have involved Bart, or may have not) that was not made at the very start of the current season.
Sometimes, you just need a little luck.
FZ has had a lot of success on short term bets on players with injury histories so I think it's by design. He won't win all of those bets but when he doesn't the worst case scenario is just 1 or 2 years of lost payroll.
DeleteKnowing his injury history, and given the likelihood of opt-out, and G's poor play last season, too bad he wasn't flipped at the deadline for some value!
ReplyDeleteDo you think maybe potential trade partners might have been aware of the injury history and opt out? The comp pick is likely to have more value than what they could get in return at the deadline.
DeleteThey're still mad at FZ for letting Gausman go...
ReplyDeleteThat's somewhat more reasonable although he's just 3-3 this year with 2 total blowouts (8 runs each game, 1 unearned) for the 19-15 BJ's. Then there was Game 2 of the 2021 NLDS and the 2-out hit by Urias...
I have seen quit a few comments including Rodon in the list of names some give as examples of FZ's failure to sign players to longterm contracts and some of those comments have been recent.

DeleteFZ has a sense of "value" which fans have pretty close to none of – except he was saved by the Yankees and the medicals this year.
Looking back at the proposed spending for Harper in FZ's first year, he's probably earning his big money beginning so young, but he has had his share of injuries, and, at 30 with 9 years left on his contract, he's entering the dangerous zone, injured. Strangely, he is better in odd years, so this could be another productive season that he ended on injured. Look good in 2 games so far.
