Game Wrap 7/6/2019: Giants 8 Cardinals 4

Madison Bumgarner grew a second left elbow after getting hit by a ball off the bat of Jose Martinez in the first inning and had to come out of the game after completing two innings.  With a prolonged break coming up, the bullpen worked overtime which also gave Austin Slater an extra pinch-hit opportunity which produced a grand slam HR which was the ultimate difference in the ballgame.  Got all that?  Key Lines:

Alex Dickerson LF- 1 for 3, 3B, HBP.  BA= .297.  Dickerson's 2-out triple in the 7'th inning added on to a 5-1 lead and set up Pablo's 2-run HR, which saved some anxiety in the top of the 8'th when Tony Watson gave up a 3-spot.

Pablo Sandoval 3B- 2 for 3, SF.  BA= .288.  The first half of this season has truly been a renaissance for Pabs who has remained remarkably happy and upbeat through an extremely frustrating and uncertain period in the team's history.

Austin Slater PH- 1 for 1, HR(2).  BA= .545.  5 of Slater's 6 hits since getting called up have gone for extra bases.  He's still showing a strong tendency to hit the ball to RF.  Is that a good thing or his he just a tad late on his contact?  I guess as long as he's driving the ball, it's probably a good thing.  I'd make him prove he can hit the inside FB if I'm an opposing pitcher, though.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.03.  Bummy took a nasty linger off his pitching arm just above the elbow during a shaky first inning.  He came back out and pitched a scoreless 2'nd inning, but came out when he grew a baseball sized swelling at the site of impact.  X-rays showed no fracture and the All-Star break gives him some time to recover.

Bullpen- 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  The bullpen produced a quality start.  A bit of concern for Tony Watson who saw his ERA balloon on a 3-run blast by Paul Goldschmidt and gave up runs for the second appearance in a row.  I guess he's not the only good pitchers who's ever given up a 3-run HR to Goldy.  Sam Dyson and Reyes Moronta worked 2 scoreless innings each while Mark Melancon had an easy 1,2,3 inning on 2 weak grounders and a line-out to Brandon Crawford.

Jeff Samardzija tries for a series win this afternoon against Jack Flaherty in the finale of the traditional first half.

  1. Crawford, Panik, Baby Yaz struggle at the plate = many K's and men LOB.

Slater needs to start until he proves he is only a platoon option.

Slater, Dickerson, Panda, waving the potent bats.

  2. Do you mean you don't think Slater can keep hitting .500+?
What's with Bumgarner? Is he a magnet for catastrophe?
There was a line in the original book when Bond thwarts Goldfinger a second time:
    Once is happenstance
    Twice is coincidence
    Three times is enemy action
    Who is Bum's enemy?

  3. A sad commentary on the Giants offense:
In 4 games, Slater is tied for 6th in WAR (Baseball-Reference).
Dickerson is tied for 4th in 16 games.
Vogt is tied with Slater @ 6 in 42 games.

So nice to see Buster come on strong with a single and double barrage: 11 for 24 (.458) with 3 doubles in his last 6 starts.

Can the Giants reverse 2016 in the 2nd "half" with 14 straight games road and home without a break through July 24th?
If the Giants play well, will FZ pull the trigger?

    1. it is a reflection on lack of offensive production from The Core
good news is that the discrepancy is GLARING
      newcomers are contributing
Posey, Craw, Belt, and Panik are old and slow

my hunch is that Z. will not allow The Core to start next year
they can be role players or cut

I know Doc will open the board for an evaluation of Farhan
      maybe at conclusion of season

the trade to bring Dickerson was brilliant
      Giants found their Muncie
Slater re-tooled his swing and is a success

I am happy with the direction Club is taking
it just needs to replace The Core ASAP

and Luciano? we have a Vlad Jr. talent here
I bet he goes to Big Club in 2021 mid season
he gets my vote as No. 1 Club Prospect

so I project Ramos, Bart and Luciano on the big club in 2021
Slater will be 28 and in his prime
hopefully Dickerson healthy and hitting bombs
and none of The Core will be starting and half probably cut from the team
