Game Wrap 7/5/2019: Cardinals 9 Giants 4

Drew Pomeranz suffered a regression in his start, the offense was not able to break through against a shaky rookie Cardinals pitcher and the bullpen was not able to stop the bleeding.  Key Lines:

Buster Posey C- 2 for 4.  BA= .255.  Buster was batting second in the lineup, which is appropriate because he is pretty much reduced to slapping the the ball around.

Alex Dickerson RF- 2 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .295.  Dickerson's Dinger was lined off the green flashing at the top of the RF wall and skipped into the Cove.  A fun one to watch.  This was his second HR in 2 games.

Brandon Crawford SS- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .223.  Just when it looked like the Giants were going to blow a no-out, bases-loaded situation in the first inning, Crawford spit on a couple of nasty pitches and drew a walk to drive in one run.  Kevin Pillar followed with a run-scoring single.

Drew Pomeranz LHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.42.  Pomeranz was coming off a couple of very encouraging starts but regressed badly in this one.  The numbers speak for themselves.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.29.  Melancon has giving up runs in 4 of his last 5 appearances.  Seems like we may be getting close to an inflection point where the probability of Melancon turning it around before the end of his contract is smaller than the probability that a replacement pitcher would be better.  In other words, a sunk cost contract.

Derek Holland LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.83.  Holland has a 1.64 ERA over his last 7 appearances and a 3.18 over his last 15.

  2. Although 4 runs would have kept the Giants in more than half their games this year (barely), the bull pen had an uncharacteristic collapse. The good news: none of the 4 pitchers really figure into the Giants plans beyond this year. Holland looks like he might be coming around, but Gott continued to be either good or bad. Although he's been good often, he's been bad too often to rely on him. The real problem is Pommeranz's inability to get through 5 innings even half the time. The 4 good games he started, only once did he last 6 innings and game out because of pitch count in every game. If the Giants record of 6 wins in 16 starts is extended for a season, they lose 102 games.
If Melancon is sunk cost, Pommeranz and Holland are too!
There are guys in Sacramento who won't smell any worse.
