Game Wrap 7/30/2019: Phillies 4 Giants 2

The Giants had a chance to gain ground on one of the teams ahead of them in the Wild Card race but reverted to early season form with lackluster pitching from Tyler Beede and an offense that produced zilch against lefty Drew Smyly, who came into the game sporting an ERA of 7.69.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt PH/1B- 1 for 1, HR(12).  BA= .235.
Steven Vogt PH- 1 for 1, HR(5).  BA= .281.  Belt and Vogt homered in the 8'th to make the final score look closer than it was.  The Giants RH platoon continues to be much weaker than the LH platoon, a situation that was evident in the offseason and has never really been addressed.  Hey!  Maybe they can cycle in Joey Rickard?

Tyler Beede RHP- 5 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.01.  Rhys Hoskins' 23'rd HR was the ultimate difference maker in this one.

Drew Smyly LHP(Phillies)- 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.85.  Like I said, ERA of 7.69 coming in.  Pretty much all that needs to be said.

The loss left the Giants 2.5 games behind the Phillies and Cubs for the final Wild Card spot.  They have 2 more games to try to make up ground on the Phillies but none before the Trade Deadline.

*********************************************************************************

Jeff Samardzija tries to even the series tonight facing hard throwing RHP Vince Velasquez.

*********************************************************************************

I'm starting to get the feeling the Giants aren't buying or selling which seems like the worst of all worlds.  Even the California Dreaming scenario depends on an upgrade or two at the trade deadline.  It's frustrating to see other teams acquire pieces who could upgrade the Giants for affordable prices in prospects.  If Zaidi can't or won't find a deal or two like that, I'd prefer he sell than hold.  Hope I am wrong and this morning brings an early Christmas present or two.

Weird 3-way trade today which saw the Indians exchange one headcase for another and the Padres join the sellers club.

Reds get RHP Trevor Bauer.  Talented but crazy.  How will he react to pitching in a hitter's heaven?

Indians get OF Yasiel Puig from the Reds and OF Franmil Reyes and LHP Logan Allen from the Padres.  Indians need corner OF power and got it, but at a price.

Padres get OF Taylor Trammell from the Reds.  Trammell has more tools than Reyes, but does not break the logjam of OF's in the Padres organization.

And yeah, the Giants could use Franmil Reyes, but I'm glad they didn't give up Heliot Ramos and more to get him.

  1. You might be right Doc but I wouldn't discount Zaidi selling either. Contenders like the Astros, Yanks, and Dodgers haven't filled their pitching needs yet and Giants are still taking calls on Bum and relievers. Have a feeling something will happen with Will Smith since they have depth, but Bum stays since they don't have replacement for him. We'll see...

  2. We need to sell.. have a 6% chance of making playoffs according to fangraphs. Even if it means just trading Smith/Dyson and counting on the depth we have in the minors in the pen. Ride with Watson/Reyes in the 8-9.

  3. Will we have a Brian Sabean "I am not an idiot" moment?

  4. i am basically an optimist with the Giants, love when my team goes for it when there is a chance, and have really enjoyed the way this team has battled and played...and even if there MIGHT be fun days ahead this season, I just dont see it with the lineup and rotation..Staying pat will be a mistake and I just dont think even with a few buyer tweeks (dealing major prospects for sgnifivant upgrades is out of the question) they can make the POs..

I wont be mad if they dont sell and I will root like heck for this ride to continue and I want nothing to do with traading MADBUM..... but if the offer is right, you have to do it..but it REALLY has to be worth it...I have sero problem dealing any of the rleievers..we have the depth in the ML and the minors...

We'll know in a few hours

  5. This do we bay or do we sell stuff is not easy. The decision to set aside logic and go for it because the Giants have players who have earned the right to take a shot has real consequences. As pointed out above, Fangraphs puts the Giants chances of making the playoffs at well under 10%. Magic can happen, and we have seen it here. We have been blessed. However, this Giants team, as heroically as they have played over the last 50+ games is under-talented and badly flawed.

At the same time, the Giants farm system is showing real signs of life. We likely won't see it in 2020, or even 2021, but by 2022 the Giants could be set for a very nice and extended period as a legitimate contender. The Giants will not make the playoffs this year, and to lose the opportunity to add young talent to the farm system, if that's the way this breaks, will be a real mistake. Tough baseball decisions are tough because of the emotions involved - players emotions and fans emotions - but that is not an excuse for anyone. I think Giants management underestimates the fan base. Most Giants fans, in their heart of hearts, know this team is not a legitimate threat to get to October, mush less do damage once there.

Everyone loves a good Cinderella story, but this is a time to make a few good trades and go put the glass slipper on three or four prospects.

    1. Scott..You know. I don't know if "Most Giants fans, in their heart of hearts, know this team is not a legitimate threat to get to October, mush less do damage once there." is true..I think it holds true for most fans like us that spend their time scouring the internet for every bit of information on prospects and PO probability and analytics, but is that true for all the regular fans, adults and kids, that love their Giant players? I don't know....

Hard decisions for a 1st year GM and I too also think it comes down to the worthiness of the offers....We'll see..

  7. I call this trade a "buy" not a "sell"!!
    Terrific job

  8. Acquiring Dubron could be a true master stroke by Farhan. I did not see any way Farhan could upgrade the big club without weakening the bullpen. It seems as though he did it. Tip of the cap.

  9. Now, Farhan has found a taker for Melancon. Surely obligated for some money, but addition by subtraction. Melancon has to waive 'No Trade' it sounds like.

  10. Adding Dubon and Subtracting Melancon has to be a Plus for Z, especially since he did not get what he was asking for to trade Bum and Smith.

  11. Now, what are the Giants getting for Dyson?

  12. Could Scooter Gennett be this year's Scutaro? or Freddy?

  13. It's never a sure thing that player moves work out, but I think Farhan did an outstanding job. I would have preferred the Giants to make the big trades, but there is no getting around how well these moves look on paper. The Giants traded NO ONE who figured to be part of their future, and they get 1) a future 2B starter, 2) roll of the dice guy in Gannett who might find his power and help at 2B, 3) huge salary relief on Melancon and two lottery tickets to boot, 4) three guys from the Twins who just might be worth something, and 5) a clear sign from the organization that they are all in! Pretty darn spectacular day for the Giants.

    1. Interesting day. I know they'll be critics but The Giants were able to trade for good prospects, save $ by dumping a big salary, trade for a good veteran hitter like Gennett, while still keeping their team together to make a run at the wild card, plus they beat the Phil's. The Giants had a great trade deadline day!

  14. I Have not been farhan's bggest fan but thought he had a great day for the reasons mentioned aboved..Since we kept the Big Guy and SMith and the Panda!...Let's win that damn WIld Card!

WIth that in mind, two questions:

    1) With both Dyson and Melancon (and Black too), who's gonna help Gott and Moronta from tthe RHS?

    2) Given ANdersson's strugggles and the poyrnetial for injuries as the seasons drags on. are DROD and and Menez the only options to help out as SP?

3)OK, a third Question..who's the next OF or two to some up and try to catch fire (Austin looks abiut Done)...Duggar seems to have done most of what was asked. Rocikard? gerber? Shaw? The guy from the Twins...Does GENNETT play OF?

    1. I'm ok with Zaidi so far since he hasn't done anything to frustrate me yet, lol. Regarding your questions: 1) Coonrod and Gustave were throwing high 90's gas from the right side today which is impressive. What about Selmon from the left side? As for your last two questions maybe Doc can identify SP and OF options in the minors for us? It's been hard to keep up with all these roster moves, but interesting.
