Down on the Farm: 7/2/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats crushed the Albuquerque Isotopes 11-2:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .333.
Joey Rickard LF- 2 for 4, SF.  BA= .324.
Francisco Pena 1B- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .333.
Aramis Garcia C- 2 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .255.
Henry Ramos RF- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .269.
Abiatal Avelino SS- 2B, HR(7).  BA= 286.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 8 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 11/7.  ERA= 5.54.

What happens to Steven Duggar after he's done rehabbing?  Is Avelino for real or is this a sillyball mirage?  Andrew Suarez' start went a bit better than his last appearance when the Cats used an Opener for him.

AA  Harrisburg Senators blasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 11-2:

Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .223.

A+  Modesto Nuts blanked the San Jose Giants 7-0:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .295.
Fabian Pena C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .205.
Jose Marte RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.96.

A  Augusta Greenjackets swarmed over the Charleston River Dogs 10-0:

Diego Rincones RF- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .294.
Mikey Edie LF- 3 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .241.
Seth Corry LHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.35.
Keith Weisenberg RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.86.

Diego Rincones is relentlessly raising his BA after a slow start hitting .299 in May and .312 in June.  This was the first time Seth Corry has gone 6 innings in his pro career.  He has 91 K's in 65 IP, but that also comes with 43 BB's.  Dominant 3 innings for Keith Weisenberg.  He has 38 K's in 29 IP for the GJ's but also 19 BB's.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes buried the Spokane Indians 9-3:

Franklin Labour RF- 2 for 5, 2 HR(9).  BA= .314.

Jesus Ozoria RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.20.

Franklin Labour seems to have toonder in his bat.

Rookie AZL  Giants Black pounded the Cubs2 7-1:

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 1 for 2, BB, SF.  BA= .167.
Jairo Pomares RF- 2 for 4, 2B, Assist(2B).  BA= .372.

Rookie AZL  Indians Red outscored the Giants Orange 10-6:

Javeyon Williams LF- 2 for 5.  BA= .342.
Marco Luciano SS- 3 for 4, 2 HR(6), BB.  BA= .404.
Connor Cannon 1B- 2 for 4, HBP.  BA= .333.
Abdiel Layer 3B- 2 for 3, BB, Sac.  BA= .286.
Conner Nurse RHP- 3.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.45.
Miguel Figueroa RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.97.

Wow!  I've been following prospects for a long time and I don't recall anything quite like what we're seeing from Marco Luciano.  What do you do with a 17 yo prospect who is way too good for a level that's already advanced for his age?  Farhan seems to be a little more aggressive in his prospect development philosophy than Sabes/Evans.

DSL  Mariners defeated the Giants 9-4:

Luis Matos CF(17 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B, HBP, SB(6).  BA= .323.
Ronoldo Flores C(17 yo)- 2 for 4, SF.  BA= .338.
Melvin Marte RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.11.

The Giants did not make quite the splash they made last July 2, but did spend some $$ on the opening of the international signing period.  As expected, they signed MLB Pipeline's #23 international prospect, LHP Esmerlin Vinicio to an $800 K deal.  They actually gave a bigger deal at $1.2 M to a Venezuelan SS, Aeverson Arteaga and another $800 K to another Venezuelan SS, Anthony Rodriguez.  They also signed a RHP, Manuel Mercedes from the DR who is described as "hard throwing."  Don't know much about any of these kids, but the video of Vinicio looks promising,  wiry, athletic, loose arm with an over-the-top delivery.  I'll try to do some digging on scouting reports when I have a bit more time.

  1. Duggar should return, when he's done rehabing. Austin gets shown the door.

    1. Pillar is gone after the Break and Tyler Austin stays in SF if he can develop into being at least average. Too much Power potential to not be patient. Austin Slater is given a longer look, Pillar has no future with the Giants.

  2. If Pillar stays hot, he should be eminently tradeable. LOL- trade the Giants leader in HRs, RBIs, 2Bs, hits, runs, and stolen bases!
Tyler Austin is young enough to keep, AND did he ever kill the Padre rally in the 7th with a bulls-eye beebee to 3rd for a spectacular double play.
Solano's career splits don't favor him against LHP but he's the only legit backup at SS. He's not young like Avelino, who should be getting the ABs if the Giants cash in the Bullpen.
By the time the Giants are relevant again, ever position player over 27 will be irrelevant. There are only 16 of the 40-man roster who are under 28 -- hang on to them!

  3. I know this view is somewhat unpopular here, but the Giants have an opportunity to make room for Duggar, Avelino, Zach Green, A Garcia and several bullpen pieces. This is NOT a roster with realistic post season hopes, and behaving as if there is hope will simply slow down the rebuilding process.

Beyond Bumgarner, Smith, Watson and Dyson, Pillar, Pablo and Vogt likely have value. None of those players are going to push the Giants over the top this year or next. The Giants need to bite the bullet and restock the organization with talent.
