Down on the Farm: 7/15/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats held off the Salt Lake City Bees 12-11:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .372.
Joey Rickard LF- 3 for 5, BB.  BA= .384.
Mike Gerber RF- 2 for 6, 2B, SB(3).  BA= .316.
Chris Shaw 1B- 5 for 6, 2 2B, HR(11).  BA= .291.
Aramis Garcia C- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .263.
Abiatal Avelino SS- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .291.
Dillon McNamara RHP- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.12.

Chris Shaw was hitting just .225 over his previous 10 games coming into this one.  Someone asked for a scouting report on Joey Rickard.  He is one of the few B-R/T-L hitters out there.  He made some noise in 2016 after being claimed off waivers by the Orioles from the Rays that offseason but then suffered a season-ending injury and was never really the same again.  He ended up riding the MLB/AAA shuttle for a couple of years and was finally DFA'd by the Orioles on June 17 of this year and claimed of waivers by the Giants because Farhan.  A little power, a little speed.  Potential 4'th or 5'th OF.

AA  Hartford Yard Goats downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-4:

Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .222.
Gio Brusa LF- 1 for 4, HR(9).  BA= .251.

A+  Lancaster Jethawks outscored the San Jose Giants 6-5:

Joey Bart DH- 2 for 5.  BA= .267.
Sandro Fabian RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .351.
Dalton Combs 1B- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .288.
Brandon Van Horn 2B- 3 for 4.  BA= .219.

Heliot Ramos' extraordinary season rolls on.  Joey Bart is 9 for 16 in his last 3 games.  Sandro Fabian stays hot.  Don't worry, I'll get to Billy Hayes at the bottom of the post.

A  Charleston River Dogs edged out the Augusta Greenjackets 3-2:

Diego Rincones RF- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .299.
Jacob Gonzalez 1B- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .230.

Matt Seelinger RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.98.

Diego Rincones seems to be making an asymptotic approach to the .300 BA mark.  Didn't realize he had hit just one Diego Dinger before tonight, or is it a Rincones Rocket?

Hunter Bishop CF- 0 for 0, 5 BB.  BA= .250.
Luis Toribio DH- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SF.  BA= .314.
Abdiel Layer 3B- 2 for 5, SB(3).  BA= .314.
Patrick Hilson RF- 1 for 4, 3B, BB, SB(7), Assist(3B).  BA= .197.
Edison Mora 2B- 2 for 4, BB, SB(3).  BA= .226.

Jorge Labrador RHP- 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.75.

Apparently nobody told Hunter Bishop you can't walk out of the desert.  Patrick Hilson showin' off his tools!  Jorge Labrador seems to have found a groove at age 20 with 27 K's against just 6 BB in 19.2 IP.  GO/AO= 2.33.

Nick Vincent RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

How impressive has Dilan Rosario been?  Hitting .350 over his last 10 games.  12 of his 18 hits have been XBH's.

Rayner Flores C(17 yo)- 3 for 4.  BA= .320.
Luis Matos CF(17 y)- 1 for 5, 2 SB(10).  BA= .336.

OK, Billy Hayes:  This is all just my opinion, but I am pretty sure I know why he is no longer managing the San Jose Giants.  A couple of days ago, I heard a recording of a pregame radio interview he did with Joe Ritzo.  In it, he absolutely laid into Joey Bart in a way that made me uncomfortable.  My synopsis goes something like this: Bart is completely lost at the plate right now.  His struggles at the plate are carrying over into his defense.  Oh, and by the way, some idiot college coach let him call his own games and he's going to have to unlearn trying to get every hitter out with hard stuff in alternating with soft stuff away.  Joe seemed to be trying to give him some opportunities to say something positive like his AB's were looking a bit better lately or he was still recovering from his hand injury but Billy wasn't having it and just kept on trashing him.

I just said to myself, wow!  Even if all that is true, a pregame radio interview is not the place to be saying it. I got the feeling that maybe Billy had a shot or two of "truth serum" before doing that interview.  I also have a feeling there is way more to this story than we can see even from this disastrous interview.  I am about 98% sure that Billy's departure is directly related to this interview and/or pre-existing issues between him and Joey Bart.  I'm also guessing it's more than random chance that Bart's bat has broken out in the games since Billy's departure. Billy Hayes might have gotten away with it before the internet and fantasy baseball created such intense interest in the minor leagues.  He might even have gotten away with it when Brian Sabean was managing the Giants farm system with benign neglect.  He apparently did not get away with it in the Farhan Zaidi era, not when was talking $%&# about a recent #2 overall draft pick and a player many analysts think is the top prospect in the Giants system.

  1. Thanks for the Scouting Report on Rickard, is he a Corner OF only or can he play CF, can he play other Positions?

How does he compare w/ Gerber in talent?

  2. One thing came out of yesterday's games, either Slater is still "sick" or he's not a big plus in the OF.
Putting Yaz in left and Slater in right seems like the wrong thing.

  3. I stumbled onto the Hayes interview and at first, ok, a bit of tough love but then as he continued, it just seemed odd and way critical for a typical radio interview of a AA manager. So the question is what was that about? What is the backstory behind the interview.

  4. Sad news out of Seattle: OF Mac Williamson designated for assignment.
Was his career ultimately affected by an on-field bull pen?
In SoCal,Mac's alter ego, Jarrett Parker's career has stalled as he is 0-12 with 8 punch outs.
Contrary to Farhan's hopes, Parra, Reed, and Joe weren't the solutions either. OTOH, Pillar, Dickerson, Yaz, and Austin have contributed lately as the Giants relentlessly march on!
