Game Wrap 7/19/2019: Giants 1 Mets 0

When Jake DeGrom is on, he is one of the ace SP's in MLB.  He's been mostly on lately with a 2.33 ERA over his last 7 starts.  He as on last night with a dominant start against the Giants which ordinarily would be all she wrote.  Young Tyler Beede matched him goose egg for goose egg for inning after inning and ended up doing it for 1 more inning.  The Giants finally won it in extra innings when Dom Smith dropped a shallow pop-up by Pablo Sandoval while Alex Dickerson raced around the bases and beat the throw home for to walk it off.  Key Lines:

Tyler Beede RHP-  8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.70.  This was Tyler Beede's 3'rd QS in a row and easily the best start of his short MLB career.  After the 16 inning game, the Giants needed him to go deep in the ballgame.  He did that in dominant fashion.  He was able to locate and change speeds on the 4-seam FB and back that up with a nasty change-up and curveball.  It's still a SSS and his track record is rife with inconsistency, but if Beede can be even a solid #3 or #4 SP, it completely changes the trajectory of the Giants "rebuild" and changes the negative narrative of the Giants drafting record over the past 10 years.

Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.61.  Smith has been shaky since the All-Star Break and was in a non-Save situation, but he was back to being his unhittable self in a dominant 9'th inning.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB,  2 K's, W(4-1).  ERA= 2.68.  Amazingly enough, Bruce Bochy navigated the 16 inning game without using Dyson or Mark Melancon so he had two semi-fresh bullpen arms at his disposal for this one.  The bullpen has been a huge part of the Giants success in turning their season around.  In addition to Will Smith's 24 Saves in 26 Save Opportunities, the Giants bullpen has a 24-10 W-L record.

The Win was the Giants 7'th in a row and 14'th of 16 in July.  They reached .500 for the first time this season and crept to within 2.0 games of the 2'nd Wild Card berth and 3 games of the first.

Jeff Samardzija tries to keep the beat going this afternoon against someone named Walker Lockett who hasn't been very good in either the majors or minors, which probably spells trouble for the Giants since I don't think they have seen him before.

  1. @.500, the Giants are down to 13th in the draft and the compensatory draft pick position for Bumgarner is falling should he not be traded.
What to do with Bum could represent a significant quandary for SF: if they hang around .500 -- or better -- for the next 10 days, they remain in the hunt for the WC, now just 2 games behind the Cards and Phils for the last slot. Even with Cueto back and Shark/Anderson/Beede/D-rod/Holland pitching well, they would be a long shot to win past the WC game without Bumgarner and Smith (as demonstrated in 2016) as the QO value goes down.
But how can they possibly trade anyone (except maybe Smith) if they manage to stretch this incredible run through July 28th against the Cubs and Padres?
The twitter and other voting shows the fans say sell, but are those the payees who go to the games?
There are 8 more games before SF goes to Philadelphia on July 29th -- they could actually be the 2nd WC then?
Can they be sellers if they are "IN" the WC game?
One more thing: SF has knocked the Dodgers lead over them from 20.5 games to 15 -- what if they're in 2nd place and, say, 13 games behind on July 28th?
    That's where they were August 11, 1951.
Can they pick up a 2Bman, as they did in 2010, 2012, AND 2014 for the 2nd half which in each year made a big difference?
Buy, sell, or hold -- who thought this would become a problem!

  2. Selling Bum is an act of throwing in the towel. I do not approve of a Bum trade. In fact try to sign him now to a 5 year deal if price is right.

This giants team could win 90 games. They only have to go 10 over .500 the rest of the way. 64 games remaining - yeah I could see them going 37 and 27. Mark it!

    1. They are 49-49 at start of today - need 41 more wins to hit 90, so would have to go 41-23 over the final 64 games (18 games over .500)...

  3. You read everywhere on Twitter and places like McCovey Chronicles and all you get is that this stretch doesnt matter, the Giants dont have a chance for the POS, their farm system sucks and they neeed to sell, sell, sell becasue all that materrs on the internet these days is prospects and the potential future...Maybe they are totally correct and I understand their points (most of them) but, I dont know, it just seems a little more complicated to me

For me, though I understand a sell off i also I think they owe it to the paying and non-internet crazy fans to see how the next two weeks play out...MADBUM is the huge one...I think they can trade ANY two of the relievers (get good prospects) and still go for it..But you trade MADBUM, it's throwing in the towell..so you only do it if the return is phenomenal not just quantity.......A very challenging position for FARHAN to be in

  4. Just based on trades in recent years for starters and relievers it seems clear to me that relievers get you more in return. Cole and Verlander were had for peanuts while Hand, Chapman, and Miller were traded for decent prospects. If that is the case then try to sell a reliever or two but don’t bother selling MadBum if teams don’t value him as much. We value him pretty high here but if we absolutely have to sell something then sell relievers.
