Down on the Farm: 4/17/2017

AAA  Las Vegas 51's came from behind to defeat the Sacramento River Cats 7-5:

Christian Arroyo SS- 2 for 5.  BA= .462.
Ryder Jones 1B- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .444.
Drew Stubbs CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .273.
Carlos Moncrief RF- 2 for 4.   BA= .360.

Chris Stratton RHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 13/3.  ERA= 7.84.

Giants continue to rotate their infielders through multiple positions putting a premium on versatility.  Ryder Jones is hot out of the gate.

The Giants traded RHP Clayton Blackburn, who they had DFA'd to make room on the 40 man roster for Tim Federowicz, to the Rangers for infielder Frandy De La Rosa.  I'll do a prospect retrospective on Clayton Blackburn, and you all pretty much know about him already, but you may be wondering whotheheck Frandy De La Rosa is.

Frandy De La Rosa was originally signed as an international FA in 2012 by the Chicago Cubs for a $600 K signing bonus, so he has some prospect pedigree.

2014 DSL:  .281/.336/.402, 12 SB, 6.8 BB%, 14 K%, 278 PA.
2015 SS:  .273/.315/.367, 11 SB, 5.4 BB%, 223 K%, 278 PA.

He was traded to the Rangers in the fall of 2015 for someone named Spencer Patton.

2016  Low A:  .250/.330/.351, 7 HR, 19 SB, 23 CS, 9.3 BB%, 19 K%, 483 PA.
2017  High A:  .107 in 33 PA.

De La Rosa started his minor league career as a SS but moved over to 2B the last couple of years and was actually playing 1B this season.  The Giants have a surplus of middle infield prospects so I'm not sure when, where or how much Frandy is going to play in the Giants system.

  1. do you know what has happened to Heath Quinn, Stephen Duggar, Dylan Davis, Gustavo Cabrera and Malique Zieglar, all Giants' outfield prospects who are MIA on the minor league rosters?

    1. I believe they are all dealing with injuries of one form or another. I think I heard that Quinn has a wrist injury and Duggar has a forearm strain. No word on any of the others.

    2. In the same vein, totally bummed that Mac Williamson has it made a reappearance in Triple-A yet. When he injured his they get in spring training, I figured it was a relatively minor set back. Now that we're in desperate need of extra ml help in the Outfield, I'm shaking my head that I haven't even seen any update on his injuries.

Any knowledge out there on Mac? His time is now, if his body didn't fail him so frequently!!

  2. Christian Arroyo! The guy goes 2 for 5 on the day and it's quiet and actually makes his BA go down! Excited to see him in the box against an elite pitching prospect, whenever that chance comes about. I have posted here before, but I have seen Arroyo a couple times and both times, I just cannot believe 1) how young he looks, 2) his controlled swing, 3) he clearly has a plan at the plate, and 4) even most of his outs come off the barrel of the bat.

In some ways, he reminds me of the batting champion version of our old friend Freddy Sanchez. Few walks, marginal power, but man can he put the ball in the gaps, move guys over, etc. Very excited about his start, especially coming out of big league camp with an idea of what real pitching looks like. AAA is extremely hitter friendly, but, strangely, will actually become more hitter friendly as the weather warms up. Could he hit .400 in the PCL? I wouldn't be surprised...
