DrB's 2016 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #9 Chris Shaw

Chris Shaw, 1B/OF.  B-L, T-R.  DOB:  10/20/1993.  6'3", 230 lbs.

Short Season:  .287/.360/.551, 12 HR, 9.5 BB%, 20.5 K%, 200 PA.

Chris Shaw was the Giants 2015 compensation round pick at #31 overall.  He is a slugging 1B/OF from Boston College whose draft stock may have slipped due to a hamate injury.  The injury did not seem to sap his power as he led the NWL in HR's in his initial pro experience.  NWL success is not always a predictor of future success, but everything, including the K's and BB's looks in order here.  I would expect an assignment to San Jose for 2016.  At this point, Shaw appears to be one of two premier power hitting prospect in the Giants minor league system along with Mac Williamson.  1B is likely his longterm position.  His ceiling is 30 dingers per season.  ETA would be 2018 at the earliest.

  1. Any thoughts/knowledge on Shaw's D...Giants put a high value on 1B defense.

    1. I don't really know anything about his D. I read a comment in a Q/A recently, not sure if it was Keith Law or BA, but they said he can play both OF and 1B, but not very well. On the other hand, the Giants used a fairly high draft pick on him, so they must think his D is either adequate or can be developed.

  2. If he can hit 25+ dingers with a BA around .270+ then his defense is not that big of a deal. League average defense would be fine. He wouldn't have to be Belt. Jason Giambi was horrible on defense but was so valuable at the plate you had to keep him. I am guessing/hoping his defense is at least better than Giambi. Otherwise, LF it is. The Giants at one point or another threw Burrell, Morse and Huff out there and they are all below average defenders at least at that point in their careers. I am sure this kid will do much better than all three of them.

  3. 2018 is perfect! In the event that BELT doesn't WANT to be a Giant, there is a 1Bman in his walk year. 20 hr's and .275 is what we get anyway

    1. And some of the best 1B defensive play in the MLB. So that 'equal offense' swap would likely set the Giants back as a team.

    2. And this is really a pretty silly discussion about something we don't know a lot about.
