DrB's 2016 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #32 Ronnie Jebavy

Ronnie Jebavy, OF.  B-R, T-R.  DOB:  5/17/1994.  6'2", 190 lbs.

Short Season:  .263/.303/.419, 10 2B, 4 3B, 8 HR, 23 SB, 3.1 BB%, 18.8 K%, 292 PA.

Jebavy was the Giants 5'th round draft pick in 2015 out of a small program in Tennessee where he made several Sportscenter highlights with acrobatic catches in the OF.  Turns out he's a pretty good hitter too.  That is a very intriguing combination of power and speed you see in that batting line.  The issue going forward will be contact and plate discipline.  He may get assigned to San Jose for 2016.  Ceiling is starting CF in MLB, but more likely 4'th OF type.  His ETA is 2019.

  1. I know the school. It's in Murfreesboro, just south of Nashville, TN. For a small school in lower-tier Division 1 conference (Conference USA), it's got a very good athletics program. You're not going to get a lot of Round 1 guys out of it, but you'll find gems like Jebavy you never heard of until they were drafted.

  2. I have seen him on film. Based on that, I make 3 observations...
    1) This guy was born to play center field. Takes great routes. Covers a lot of ground. Sure hands. Good arm. Flair for the dramatic catch (look him up on youtube to see what I mean).
    2) Very good athlete. Still needs to learn patience and selectivity at the plate, but he has the size and athletic ability to make himself into a very good hitter and base runner (23 out of 27 in stolen bases last season).
    3) He fits the Giants profile: Exceptional athlete. Coachable (improved as the season went on - he did well for SK in the playoffs). Good defender at a premium position (CF). Good personal qualities - his coaches speak highly of him. Needs to cut down on strikeouts, increase walks.

I know it is a small sample, but, IMO, this guy is the wild card in the minors for Giants CF of the future.

  3. He could turn out to be a Kevin Pillar caliber of player- some pop, not many walks, not excessively high strike outs, about 25 SB, but exceptional defense that outweighs any offensive shortcomings.
