Game Wrap 6/2/2015: Pirates 7 Giants 4

Didn't the Giants come home from a triumphant road trip around the first of June last year and then fall flat on their face?  This game started off promising for the Giants with some early scoring, but Andrew McCutchen and a parade of Pirates tooled up hitters cruised on past to win going away.  Key Lines:

Hunter Pence- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .282.  Pence took some extra BP to work on his opposite field approach and it paid off tonight for a 3-hit game.

Buster Posey- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .290.  Posey got the scoring started by cashing in runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with a double down the RF line.  Apparently it was more than just Hunter Pence working on their oppo field approach?

Brandon Crawford- 2 for 4, HR(8), BB.  BA= .297.  Crawford continues to state his case for team MVP if not NL MVP!

Chris Heston- 3.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.29.  Heston had pitch movement, but not his typical command.  When he  tried to throw the 2-seam FB down in the zone, he held it too long and pulled it down and glove-side.  When he didn't pull it, he left it up in the zone and the Pirates 5-tool hitters soon drew a bead on it.  He had better command of his slider and changeup, but pitching backwards still doesn't work without the FB.

Andrew McCutchen(Pirates)- 4 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .292.  Talk about stating a case!   If 'Cutch is not the NL MVP, and Bryce Harper is a formidable rival, he is pretty close to it.  And do the Pirates have some sort of corner on true 5-tool OF's?  There seems to be a never-ending stream of them in their lineup.  They have a pretty toolsy guy leading off and playing 3B too.  Man, I'd be ecstatic if the Giants farm system produced just one player as good as any of these guys!

The Loss left the Giants 2 games behind the Dodgers, who split a doubleheader with the Rockies, and 0.5 games up in the race for the first Wild Card playoff spot.

Tim Hudson tries to break a 4 games losing streak tomorrow facing Francisco Liriano.

  1. it all begins and ends with starting pitching

that and the giants have just not been able to put away the opposing pitcher when they have him on the ropes

if craw keeps up this pace through june, he is a shoe in for the as team, even if he doesnt get the vote from the fans (thanks to the national media totally ignoring what he is doing)

and doc, you were right...beede got the bump today...so you were smart going to watch him when you did

in other news....mcclendon had an epic meltdown in seattle tonite.....with replay, i didnt think he would ever get one in...but he figured out a way....he is always good for one a season

  2. McCutchen would make an awesome Giant. 2005 wasn't their best draft, aside from Romo.

When's the last time the Giants even drafted a 5 tool stud OF type that looked complete out of the box? Maybe Sabean's in the field right now ready to stock the farm with 'em before he rides off into the sunset.

My only concern with the last few games is that the Giants were getting blatantly formulaic in their approach. Aggressive on the 1st pitch, and the 2 strikes and 2 out thunder...easy to scout the patterns in how they approach certain situations.

  3. The most frustrating thing about this toe-stubbing against the Pirates is they're just mid-pack on offense. But the few days half of them looked like they were channeling their inner Willie Stargell.

  4. Hey doc,
How about Mac Williamson? You feeling good about him or more tempered?

Don't know if you've run a draft special yet, but what are your hopes and anticipations?

Ian Happ seems like a good get to me if he's available. I'd gladly see them grab James Kaprielian who's more likely to be available. 18 & 31, so should be some intrigue, I hope one of them is a fast riser.

    1. Big Mac is doing fine. I would rank him as the top OF prospect in the system by a pretty big margin right now.

I have been posting about the draft since the beginning of the offseason. If you go look in the Blog Archive to the left, you will find profiles of most of the top prospects in the draft throughout the offseason. More recently I have posted comments on various mock drafts. I will probably post at least one more draft article before the draft.

You also may want to check out Covechatter's draft stuff. I would say he and I mostly agree on who we like and who we think the Giants might draft. Shankbone has some good stuff on his You Gotta Like These Kids site.

You also may want to check out the Giants related stuff on Minor League Ball's recent Community Mock Draft. I'll say if the Giants come away with a top 3 of Justin Hooper, Nolan Watson and Mikey White, I will have no complaints.

I like Happ too. I think he may well be gone by the time the Giants pick at #18.
