AAA Sacramento River Cats blanked the Fresno Grizzlies 2-0:
Ryan Lollis(DH)- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .318.
Jarrett Parker(LF)- 2 for 4, 3B, BB. BA= .262.
Darren Ford(CF)- 2 for 4, 2 SB(16). BA= .257.
Nick Turley(LHP)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 6.59.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.23.
Mike Broadway(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(6). ERA= 1.30.
Travis Ishikawa gets the callup instead of Parker. Turley has twirled 2 strong starts in a row after 2 bad ones. He has been very hot and cold. I assume Blackburn is pitching out of the bullpen only until Peavy and Cain complete their rehab assignments.

AA Trenton Thunder defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-3:
Devin Harris(LF)- 2 for 4, 2 HR(6). BA= .265.
Tyler Beede(RHP)- 5.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 0 K's, GO/AO= 10/3. ERA= 5.01.
Phil McCormick(LHP)- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.65.
I get the whole pitch to contact thing, but 0 K's is probably taking it to an extreme. Beede did allow 1 dinger, but it was a solo job. The rest was a good old fashioned BABIPing.

Short Season Hillsboro Hops topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-2:
Brennan Metzger(CF)- 2 for 5. BA= .217.
Miguel Gomez(3B)- 3 for 4. BA= .400.
Logan Webb(RHP)- 4 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 8.00.
Rayan Hernandez(RHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.
So far, Gomez has not had trouble with the jump from the DSL. Webb has struggled in his first 2 starts. Love what I'm seeing in Rayan Hernandez' pitching lines.

Manuel Geraldo(SS, 18 yo)- 2 for 5, HR(2). BA= .314.

Sandro Cabrera(LHP, 20 yo)- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.46.
Jasier Herrera(RHP, 17 yo)- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.50.
Several of the 17 year olds had good games. Keep an eye out for Jasier Herrera. He is listed at 6'5", 190 lbs.

I am more concerned on the 36 balls that he threw in the game than the 0 K effort. He's been pretty wild with the command in his last 3 starts. Not sure what's wrong with him today. Promotion jitters? Mechanics issues? Lacking the feel of the sinker? I hope Steve Kline along with Beede himself can fix what's wrong right now.
ReplyDeleteNo pitcher is going to have perfect command every game. I think it's a bit premature to say something is "wrong."
DeleteAbout Beede, is he still not using his whole repertoire of pitches and just working on his new pitches? Or has he been set free yet?
ReplyDeleteKnowing this would help in interpreting what was happening in this disaster start. He was certainly BABIPed to an extent, but there is no BABIP mean to regress to in the minors, if I understand things right, so who knows. And as you aptly noted, 0 K's is taking it to an extreme, if that was all he was doing, pitching to contact.
Knowing whether he can go to a wider selection of pitches or limited to what the Giants have been telling him to work on would be good to know.
I have no idea. I saw him in his last start for San Jose and to my amateur eye from a suboptimal angle, it looked like he was using everything.
DeleteAny ideas about the Slater promo to RVA today? Maybe a Tomlinson or Moreno promo to Sacto? If so, it would most likely Tomlinson.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit surprised to see Slater promoted this quickly. I saw him a couple of weeks ago and he didn't look all that comfortable at the plate.
DeleteSlater's been playing the middle infield, hasn't he? We already have enough MI, what's the reasoning behind this move?
DeleteThe Giants have developing surpluses at almost every position. I would say that it is easier to move from MI to OF than vice-versa so if you are looking for versatility and keeping options open, it makes sense to give Slater experience playing MI.
DeleteAccording to Mac's Twitter account and the replies, both he and Tomlinson have been promoted to Sacto. Not surprising and well deserved. We'll miss them both in RVA.
