Down on the Farm: 6/4/2015

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Oklahoma City Dodgers 5-4:

Casey McGehee(3B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .357.
Travis Ishikawa(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .319.
Adam Duvall(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .292.
Carlos Triunfel(2B)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .248.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 7/5.  ERA= 4.50.

McGehee stays hot.  Isn't there a day of reckoning coming up for him?  Blackburn has a QS after 3 consecutive non-QS's.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Portland Sea Dogs 4-3:

Kelby Tomlinson(2B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .330.
Rando Moreno(SS)- 2 for 5.  BA= .308.
Mac Williamson(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(2).  BA= .294.
Myles Schroder(3B)- 3 for 4.  BA= .248.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Tyler Mizenko(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.97.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(13).  ERA= 1.80.

Adalberto Mejia's first game back from his suspension.  He pitched 4 innings of no-hit ball.  Someone claiming inside info over on MCC said his FB velocity was 91-94 on a scouting gun.  The coaches commented that he had great FB command to both sides of the plate and a very good changeup.  The curveball was less impressive.

High A  San Jose Giants rounded up the High Desert Mavericks 3-2 in 13 innings:

Christian Arroyo(SS)- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .327.
Jason Forjet(RHP)- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.77.
Luis Ysla(LHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.47.
Christian Jones(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's  ERA= 5.91.
Jake Smith(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.41.
Dan Slania(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.69.

I think Jason Forjet is a sleeper in the system.  He's a bit old, but pitched quite well for S-K last year.  Ian Gardeck gave up 2 unearned runs in the top of the 13'th only to come out a winner when the Giants plated 3 in the bottom of the inning.  All runs scored in the game came in the final inning.

Low A  Lexington Legends outlasted the Augusta Greenjackets 3-2 in 13 innings:

Cristian Paulino(CF)- 2 for 6.  BA= .322.
Jeremy Sy(SS)- 2 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .202.
Chris Johnson(RHP)- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.60.
EJ Encinosa(RHP)- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.64.
Reyes Maronta(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.24.

This might have been Encinosa's best appearance as a pro.

DSL  Giants pounded the Rojos 13-1:

Jose Patino(CF, 17 yo)- 1 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .200.
Robinson Medrano(1B, 19 yo)- 3 for 4, 3B.  BA= .467.
Mecky Coronado(DH, 18 yo)- 5 for 5.  BA= .438.
Beicker Mendoza(LF, 17 yo)- 2 for 3, 3B, BB, SB(1).  BA= .353.
Francisco Medina(3B, 17 yo)- 2 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .231.
Hengerber Medina(RHP, 20 yo)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Norwith Gudino(RHP, 19 yo)- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.91.

This is the biggest crop of 17 yo's that I can remember the Giants fielding in the DSL.  I'm not giving up on Robinson Medrano!  Hengerber!!!  Speaking of 17 go's, Sandro Fabian had an OF Assist.

  1. Nice to see Mejia back and coming out of the gates strong. I have noticed that you only ranked Mejia #14 on your list, DrB. Is the low ranking the result of his suspension and possibly weight issues due to the steroids are weight supplements or is it something else?

    1. I thought his performance last year was somewhat disappointing although I was not writing him off as a prospect by any means. Based on his spring training performance and his performance yesterday, I would definitely move him up the list several notches, possibly as high as #2.

  2. For some reason my Wednesday post didn't make it on here. Wednesday night Ty Blach showed he can pitch. He was throwing 88-89 but the gun may be a little slow on the readings. Ty has a bit of deception in his delivery and sort of short arms the ball but hides the ball well. It sure seems like the hitter don't pick him up well. He did a really nice job moving the ball around the zone. On Wed night Juan hit a bomb to lead off the game 425' off the top of the outfield score board.

  3. Last night Clayton Blackburn came home to OK to pitch in front of family and friends. Clayton actually pitched against my son in HS baseball so it was great to see him again. With that said, his line looks great but Clayton walked the tight-rope last night. He was throwing 87-88 with the fastball and has a curve ball that he is throwing at 68. Like I said in a previous post the radar gun may be off 2-3 MPH. This game could have gotten out of hand easily in the first 3 innings with Blackburn being hit pretty hard but he did pitch out of trouble and got lucky with some good defense behind him. He also started a pretty nice DP to get out of an inning. Adrianza had a nice game defensively but his bat is pretty weak. Eric Cordier came in to save the game in the 9th and was hitting 96-98 and looked good. I know Casey is hitting for a decent average but only one of his AB's looked good. His second hit was an "excuse me" check swing that popped over the 1st baseman. A couple of his other AB's were down right ugly. His range at 3rd base is very average at best. Ishi, and Hector look just like they always do, decent players that are just a little limited with the bat. Ishi has actually had 3 balls go to the wall in this series that were caught.

  4. When you say that Meija's curve was less impressive is that a "rust" thing or he's really only got one plus pitch. I'm hoping Meija really hits it this year, so he and Beede are ready to go for next.
