Down on the Farm: 6/16/2015

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Sacramento River Cats 3-1:

Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(4).  BA= .303.
Jake Peavy(RHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.64.

QS for Peavy who showed he has the stamina to go 7 IP.  Still a bit unconvincing that he is ready to upgrade the current Giants rotation.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Harrisburg Senators 1-0:

Joe Biagini(RHP)- 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 12/3.  ERA= 1.56.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(17).  ERA= 1.45.

This was Big Joe's 7's QS in a row.  In 4 of those starts, he did not allow an ER.  He actually would have 9 QS's in a row if he could have gotten 2 more batters out in a game in which he allowed just 2 ER.

High A  Modesto Nuts edged the San Jose Giants 4-3 in 10 innings:

Seth Harrison(CF)- 1 for 4, HR(2), Sac.  BA= .270.
Tyler Horan(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .222.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .291.
Keury Mella(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.95.
Christian Jones(LHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.03.

*********************************************************************************

Low A Lexington Legends topped the Augusta Greenjackets 4-2:

Cristian Paulino(CF)- 1 for 2, 2 BB, SB(17).  BA= .297.
DJ Snelton(LHP)- 5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K.  ERA= 5.40.
Dusten Knight(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.57.
Raymundo Montero(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.41.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Giants beat the Mets1 2-0:

Sandro Fabian(RF, 17 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .260.
Prebito Reyes(LHP, 19 yo)- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.46.
Luis Amaya(LHP, 16 yo)- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.79.
Hengerber Medina(RHP, 20 yo)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(1).  ERA= 2.00.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants signed their Compensation First Round draft pick Chris Shaw to an under slot deal and used the savings to sign 3'rd round pick Jalen Miller to an over slot deal.

  1. If Peavy and/or Cain are reinserted into the rotation, who gets dropped from the rotation, the 25, and the 40?

    1. What happens if Tommy Hanson's recovery is for real ? He is an very decent pitcher when healthy. Very nice potentially by July

  2. Ken Correia was picked up by the Phillies and is pitching tonight. He's been effective @ Sacramento, but there were just too many ahead of him. Good luck, Ken, a good guy.
Vogelsong's last 3 starts have not been good, Hudson is next bad; Heston and Lincecum have been better, but always problematic.
    Heston has options
    Vogelsong would clear waivers (?)
Lincecum has been effective in the bullpen in the past, he's safe on the roster if not in the rotation
Giants will stick with Hudson until his arm falls off
At this moment, if Peavy can do another QS and Vogelson can't, it answers itself doesn't it?
Cain has at least a few more starts in Sac before ... what?

    1. It's Kevin Correia.

It is just 3 starts and Vogelsong was hurt by bad luck in each. Even including them, he has a 3.79 ERA since taking over the starter's spot for Peavy, and 3.00 ERA over his last 8 starts.

If anyone should go, it would be Hudson. Baggarly suggests that the Giants probably could find a reason to DL Hudson once Cain or Peavy is ready.

Frankly, it was announced early that Peavy is not going to be 100% this season, that the goal was to get him pitching. Why not throw him into the Vogie long relief role, except use him in set-up situations to soak up innings that Kontos, Romo, and Casilla has been taking? That way, Vogie stays in a position where he has been probably the second best/steadiest of the starting pitching, Peavy is put in a spot where his health is not exposed in every start, and Peavy is not forcing his body to absorb innings when he's not 100% anyway. In which case, then you send down Strickland (assuming Broadway is sent down when Blanco is ready to return).

I would also be OK with Lincecum in a super-relief role as well, as another alternative way to open up a rotation spot for Peavy. I think there is a lot of ways to go, including sending Heston back down to AAA (though, they have not used an option on him yet for the season, so it would be better to keep him up than to use an option on him now).

And remember, Peavy had a QS against AAA and AAAA hitters. That he struck out only 5 batters is not encouraging to me, tied to him walking 2 batters as well. That is not a sign that he's ready to dominate in the majors and throw QS's.

  3. I'm VERY excited to hear that the Giants got Jalen Miller signed so quickly - or at all - and are moving fast on the important characters. I don't think they'll miss signing the guys they really want - Bickford, Mac Marshall, et al - and if that's the case, seems like this was another great draft for the Giants that has the potential to yield really exciting characters into our minors lines!

Thanks for the work Doc. Jalen (Jay-lin?) was the biggest signability question IMO, and it's fantastic that they've got it done. In my book, that's a potential 1st round kid; they got two big hit tools along with a top-level arm in a single draft. Art.

PS - Jalen Miller is a great baseball name!

  4. ... and just to make the question more interesting, Sabean was reportedly at a couple of Reds games scouting (in theory) Cueto, Leake, and/or Chapman. Might we have a completely different rotation by August?

  5. Joe Biagini(RHP) -- He just keeps blowing my mind. I keep waiting for his carriage to turn back into a pumpkin, but he keeps on chugging along, quality-outing after quality-outing.
