Scouting the 2015 Draft: Jake Lemoine

Jake Lemoine is a big, 6'5", 220 lb., hard throwing RHP out of Univ. of Houston.  He's a kid who is still very much growing into his body as he is still inconsistent with both velocity and command, but showed a lot of improvement between his freshman and sophomore seasons.  His FB ranges from 89-97, but usually sits 91-94.  He has a "tall and fall" overhand delivery that produces downward plane and lots of groundball outs.  His breaking ball and changeup are average but improving and good enough that scouts see him as a starter in pro ball.  Here are his college stat lines:

2013:  7-4, 3.49, 69.2 IP, 33 BB, 45 K.
2014:  6-8, 2.87, 106.2 IP, 29 BB, 87 K.

If he takes another step forward, increases his K rate and becomes more consistent with a mid-90's velocity, he could gain some helium on some boards as the draft approaches.  BA has him as their #22 ranked draft prospect for 2015 while Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs has him at #23.  He has the body and upside the Giants seem to like.  So he is worth watching in college boxscores.

  1. Too early to speculate who the Giants will take with their 19th pick, since player's stocks go up and down during the season, but its still fun to check out who's available before the season starts.. It would be great if the Giants take a starting pitcher, which seems to be a strength of the draft, and position player with their 1st round and supplemental draft picks.. Wouldn't it be something if history strikes twice and a former 1st round pitcher Phil Bickford (10th overall) fell into the Giants lap at #19 similar to how Tyler Beede fell to them last year? It was interesting how he struggled at Cal St Fullerton last year.. I would also be happy if a Alex Bregman fell to them at #19 and a pitcher like Jake Lemoine is taken with their supplemental pick.. The draft is something fun to look forward to in the summer.. Thanks for posting "Scouting the 2015 draft".

    1. Thanks. Bickford is actually up next. BA has him at #23 but Kiley McDaniel has him all the way up in single digits. There are actually a lot of very interesting players left to profile. I think the Giants should be able to get 3 near top-of-the-line prospects with each of their first 3 picks.
