Down on the Farm: 4/5/2012

Ha! The minor leagues got started before the big club. How do you like that?

AAA Fresno Grizzlies shut out the Tucson Padres 3-0.

Tyler Graham(CF)- 2 for 4. BA= .500.

Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .500. I think Roger K is going to break out this year.

Joaquin Arias(SS)- 2 for 4. BA= .500.

Ryan Vogelsong(RHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 0.00. I'd like to see fewer BB's, but otherwise, Vogey seems to be ready.

Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(1). ERA= 0.00. He gave up a couple of hits, but got out of the inning with the Save.

AA New Britain Rock Cats edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2.

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 3, BB, PO. BA= .333. IMO, one thing Gary Brown really needs to work on is tightening up his running game. He gets thrown out and picked off way too often.

Chris Dominguez(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, Assist(Beresford at 2B). BA= .500. Dominguez played LF. Hopefully his AA experience for half a season last year will give him a leg up on the league this year.

Justin Fitzgerald(RHP)- 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 6.73.

Chris Gloor(LHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Jake Dunning(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

High A San Jose Giants held of a late rally by the Modesto Nuts for a 4-3 win.

Ryan Lollis(CF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB. BA= .500.

Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .333. Ricky gets an RBI in his first official professional AB.

Jarrett Parker(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= .250, Assist(K Parker at 2'nd base).

Shawn Sanford(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 9/4. ERA= 0.00. This can't be right, but the boxscore says Sanford threw just 26 Pitches in his 6 innings of work.

Seth Rosin(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats squeaked past the Augusta Greenjackets 3-2.

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 2 for 5, 3B. BA= .400. Willoughby is repeating the league.

Ben Thomas(1B)- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .333.

Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, 2 HBP, GO/AO= 5/0. ERA= 3.86. Blackburn was dominating for the first 4 innings before running into trouble in the 5'th. Derek Law allowed one of his inherited runners to score.

If you don't think MLB has entered an fairly extreme pitcher's era, take a look at the boxscores around the league from today's games. The two games in Japan and one yesterday weren't exactly slugfests either.

  1. Drb - I think the pitch counts must be based on operator error. Without pitchfx, like during spring training, the operator apparently has to input balls and strikes manually so during ST or minor league games it's often truncated so the operator saves time. HBP=1 ball, hit = 1 strike, strikeouts=3 strikes, walks = 4 balls, and so on.

Out of curiosity, assuming some sort of "normal" starter progression for Blackburn (no major injuries), what would his minor league career look like?

    1. Also; Panik was at shortstop today with Jurica at 2B. A couple of walks for Panik.

    2. Blackburn is only 19, but the Giants aren't afraid to push their young pitchers. Cain and MadBum both hit the majors at young ages. If he follows a similar path, Blackburn would probably stay in Augusta all year, start next year in San Jose, but jump to Richmond mid-season if he's going good. After AA, AAA is usually just a half season tune-up before hitting the bigs, depending on the needs of the MLB club. If everything goes right for Blackburn, I could see him pitching in AT&T Park by mid-season 2014. You could say the same about Crick and Mejia.

    3. I didn't realized how big it was !! If you are right on this schedule, the success of this three pitchers should be the key about the Giants desire to extend Lincecum contract past 2013 when Zito and Volgesong won't be in orange & black uniform anymore.

  2. Go Ricky! He's so fine! Hey Ricky!

Yeah, Brown noted in an interview during AFL that he needed to work on his stealing. Looking at his first and second halves, you can see that he sharply reduced his attempts while improving his success rate. Hopefully our SB instructor is giving tips now, who is that?

I saw that Blackburn line somewhere else. I am salivating!

About Sanford, the only way that works is if he either gave up hits or got outs on one pitch each plus four for walk and three for strikeout. Got to be wrong.

  3. I listened on internet radio to the Richmond team (so mad the Giants don't have opening day the same day). Dunning's 3 hits were all infield dribblers. He K'd 3, there was a CS and a hard hit ball that got gobbled up for a double play. They made the Ninth interesting - Gary Brown single (apparently he was robbed in his 2nd AB and also walked his first AB but was then promptly picked off... priority #1 Gary, don't get picked off) then Adrianza single, wild pitch'd them to 2/3. Then with 2 outs and 2 strikes Dominguez hit a dribbler that he beat out and apparently leveled the 1B at the base, Adrianza alertly took home. Speed can be a killer. I have my doubts about Chris D's contact issues into a power corner infielder...

Tommy Boy had a terrible first day in the big bad eastern. 3 swinging strikeouts.

    1. Got jumbled there, should read although I have my doubts about the contact issues, if Dominguez can successfully convert into a power corner, that would be awesome. He really is more of a 2 true outcome guy right now though.

  4. latorre said that vogie looked sharper than his last outing. i guess he will be ready by the 15th, but im not sure...his pitch count was up to 89 by the 4th

milb site upgraded, and at least for me, is filled with bugs

not sure if anyone noticed, but linden is back in the fold

not worried about joseph...some guys need a bit of time to adjust

    1. Yep, noticed that a month or two ago, saw an article about Linden coming back.

I don't know if I can recall one minor league hitter who suddenly figures it out in his early 30's, Robert Redford notwithstanding. Though I suppose all those A's finds of 10 years ago were pretty close if not there, Geronimo, that lefty HR hitter, maybe another.

Then again, not too many pitchers, Vogelsong and Solomon Torres made comebacks in their 30's, though maybe I'm just not as aware of other teams.

But at least it would make some sense, though, for a pitcher, because maybe he finally learns a pitch he never tried before, or a new grip that changes things, or just how to handle a batter within the count. I thought the A's were dumb to let Casilla go, but apparently he learned a new pitch that off-season between the A's and Giants.

About Joseph: it's just one game, but yeah, some guys need time to adjust, especially in the Eastern League, a notorious pitcher's league. Some of the parks there really kill power. I would give any pro player at least a month before I panic, unless he's striking out in half his ABs the first week, then maybe I push the timeline up.

  6. We faced both Hinshaw and Turpin yesterday, as well. Hinshaw was lights out (struck out the side) while Turpin struggled. Interesting to see the former Giants play...
