Game Wrap 8/1/2022: Dodgers 8 Giants 2

Logan Webb RHP and the Giants lineup was no match for the Dodgers juggernaut in another lopsided loss to the Bad Guys.

Wilmer Flores 2B hit his 16'th HR.  If some team postseason-bound team out there needs a RH bat off the bench, they could do a lot worse than Wilmer Flores.

The Loss leaves the Giants 4.5 games behind in the race for the final Wild Card playoff spot with 3 more games looming against the Dodgers who the Giants clearly are not physically competitive with.  With less than 24 hours left until the trade deadline, I would think that should be a pretty clear message to sell.

Churn Watch:

The Giants did make a minor move today trading Jeremy Walker RHP to the Rays for Ford Proctor C/IF and right away you can see from the position designation that Proctor is FZ's kind of player.  In somewhat of a surprise, Kervin Castro RHP was designated for assignment.  Jeremy Walker?  I honestly had no idea the Giants had a player by that name in the organization.

Once again, Alex Wood LHP tries to get the Giants back on track facing former Giant Tyler Anderson LHP whose body seems to have suddenly become possessed by the ghost of Cy Young.  As Sergio Romo would say, "what's up with that?"

  1. Every day that passes I lose more and more confidence in the front office. I was critical of FZ when he first showed up because I don't think he did enough selling, and I haven't liked any drafts. But then last year happened so obviously I thought highly of him and the team. Maybe I'm to reactionary to be so down on him again, but it's been 4 years and he hasn't really added a single young core player to the team. Just older role players. Are we even that much better of then when he showed up (besides the old contracts expiring)?

    1. We were all probably a little too impressed by last year and do depressed over this year. But I have to agree. Even if you squint hard it's tough to see this team heading in any direction and the talent level seems to be eroding rather than building. I've raised the alarm over the draft results for awhile now. Scouting and drafting is still the backbone of any MLB organization. If FZ does not turn that around and soon, it will be his undoing as GM.

    2. Padres get Soto might as well pack it in for the next few years and get some top 5 picks in the draft. Ownership can fire Farhan and blame him for everything even though they knew what they were doing when they hired him. Mission accomplished, payroll is a fraction of what it was before FZ. Wish the farm was in better shape with all the coaches and new approaches and extra draft picks this front office has had. I guess it takes more than the smartest guy in baseball to win!

  2. It may be time to move on from Dave Brundage in Sacramento this offseason. Maybe the prospects can benefit from a new coaching staff there next season. If the prospects don't start showing progress in Richmond and Sacramento next season, FZ will be on the hot seat.

  3. Well, that's that: Soto for Hosmer...
    Plus a lot.
More than Luciano and Harrison? Perhaps FZ wouldn't go there.
Padres get Bell, give multiple high prospects.
San Diego is a great town - maybe they'll have a great team, too.

    1. Hosmer says Nyet! Gets sent to Boston instead.

    2. If what FZ said is true that the Giants didn't have any untouchables and the Nationals preferred the Padres trade package for Soto says something about the Giants talent level now. Just for fun I glanced at the 2016 thru 2018 before FZ drafts and came away disappointed. They traded their best pick Bryan Reynolds while Helliot Ramos regressed, but 2018 picks Joey Bart and David Villar are trying to gain traction in MLB so there's hope. They haven't gotten much help from the Farm since 2016. If this continues to be a problem under FZ then every aspect of the farm should be looked at: scouting, drafting, and player development. After 107 wins and a division title I would like to see FZ hang around for at least a couple more years to see if he can upgrade the farm system

  4. Who did FZ sign or trade for that played on the 107-win NL West Champion post season team last year?
Donvan Solano, Alex Dickerson, Mike Yastrzemski, Wilmer Flores, LaMonte Wade Jr., Darin Ruf, Curt Casali, Kris Bryant, Mauricio Dubón, Mike Tauchman, Thairo Estrada, Tommy La Stella, Jason Vosler, Anthony DeSclafani, Kevin Gausman, Alex Wood, Sam Long, Aaron Sanchez, José Álvarez, Scott Kazmir, Zack Littell, Jarlín García, John Brebbia, Matt Wisler, Dominic Leone, and Jake McGee.
Not to mention Gabe Kapler and most of the staff, for a team that lost 98 games in 2017 and 89 more in 2018.

Gee, Farhan, what have you done for us lately?

    1. Of that entire list of players you mentioned only 2 of them actually showed up in the playoffs. These teams are built on weak foundations with players who are lucky to have a chance to be on a major league roster. What has FZ built for next year and beyond with no draft picks panning out and nobody signed long term. Farhan is the guy at the poker table who folds pre flop every hand except when he is a blind. He is conservative to a fault reluctant to take any big risks which will keep this team floundering in mediocrity for as long as he continues to dumpster dive.

    2. Anon: Who "actually showed up in the playoffs" wasn't the point.
      Who got them there was.
Granted, a few listed didn't help much, but 105 wins rather than 107 would not have won the Division. That was the point.
Many think it's Farhan's money he's not spending, but do they know what his limits are, although it should be evident by whom he has signed and for how long.
He has proved he would spend whatever it takes for a long term difference maker: Bryce Harper.
      Is Harper's happy he's a Phillie?

  5. Kinda head-scratching series of moves today. I infer they couldn't get much for Rodon in light of the player option, which is essentially an injury guarantee, which in turn I infer Farhan refused to guarantee. I note that the Angels got pretty much zilch other than a little salary relief for Syndergaard, who's not really in Rodon's league this year but has been a serviceable starter.

A handful of interesting prospects for Ruf, Casali, and Rosenthal. I guess Wynns has performed well enough to make Casali redundant and a short-termer, and the Yerminator is the new version of Ruf. But no idea why they wanted J.D. Davis at this juncture.

And the Rosenthal trade really confused me--if you're keeping Rodon and Petersen and presumably going to make a little bit of a run at it, why give up the only high-ceiling relief rental you already signed? Again, a head-scratcher.

  6. Maybe J.D. Davis can be a stopgap to for next season

    1. Davis is a decent fielder at 3B. Not so much in OF. His bat is probably more advanced than Villar but I think Villar has more power potential. I'd like to see Villar get the PA's the rest of this season. Might as well release Longoria now.

    2. Villar may slide to second next season, 2023 may be a lot of veteran stopgap players next year
