Mike Yastrzemski CF/RF hit 2 HR's to lead the Giants offense in support of a strong 7 innings from Logan Webb RHP. The bullpen hung on for the win with a little Torture in the 9'th inning for old times sake.
I was actually thinking out a post about how the Giants have probably gotten as much out of YtY as they are going to and it might be time to move on. Then he goes out and hits two bombs to drive in half the Giants runs. As Vin Scully would say, "go figure!"
Thairo Estrada 2B added a 2-run shot in his first game off the concussion IL. The Giants TV broadcast showes a stat where Estrada was just the 6'th SF Giants infielder hit at least 10 HR and steal at least 15 bases in a season. Kind of a random, arbitrary stat but hey! It's kind of impressive too!
Logan Webb RHP- 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K, GO/AO= 11/3. Typical Quality Start by Webb. He's 10-5 W-L which is quite good for a SP these days. His ERA of 3.17 may be a mild disappointment to some but he's actually pitched really well and kept the Giants in most of his starts. He has 16 QS out of 23 on the season tied for 3'rd in the NL(2 pitchers have 17). QS is not the greatest stat in the world but I think it's a pretty good indicator of a pitcher's ability to go deep into games and give their team a chance to win.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(14). ERA= 3.00. Doval retired the last two batters with the winning run at the plate in a walkoff situation. He struggled with his command but it looked like Joey Bart C took charge of the situation and played a big role in getting him through to the Save.

Churn Watch: Thairo Estrada was activated off the concussion IL. Yermin Mercedes LF/1B/C was optioned to AAA Sacramento. Oh, and the Giants signed Steele Walker OF to a minor league deal.

The Giants head south to take on the big bad Padres with Alex Wood LHP facing Blake Snell LHP in Game 1 tomorrow evening. This series is a 3-gamer.
On a side note, I know Farhan has taken heat for not signing or replacing Kris Bryant, who is a fine player and seems like a nice guy. I can't help note that, here we are on August 8 and, while Bryant has a healthy OPS of .851, he has only 160 AB and 5 HR, while missing substantial time with back problems and, now, again on the IR with plantar fasciitis. He's going on 31 and signed for 7 years, through 2028, for $182 million, and Heaven only knows what other chronic conditions he'll face as he ages. I tend to think Farhan made the right call there.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I think he should pay an outlandish sum for Aaron Judge in 2023. Personally I'd suggest 5 years $300 million. If they frontload it it ought to be enough. Time to bring that young man home, where he should have been.
I'm glad the Giants didn't sign Bryant. It's frustrating enough having him on my fantasy team, lol. I hope they sign Judge too.
