Game Wrap 8/28/2022: Twins 8 Giants 3

Jakob Junis RHP got roughed up for 6 ER in 4.1 IP and the sick and injured Giants lineup failed to drive in enough baserunners as the Twins completed a sweep in Minneapolis.

The Giants started the day with YtY complaining of a calf injury, Joc Pederson with groin tightness and Luis Gonzalez feeling ill.  YtY started the game anyway but didn't look like he was feeling too good.  Evan Longoria left the game early with right hamstring tightness and Gonzalez came in to fill the gap.  Got all that?

The lineup got 13 runners on base including 4 doubles yet managed just 3 runs.

The Giants return home to face the Padres who lead them by 7.5 games for the final Wild Card playoff spot, so there's a chance to make up some ground.....or else fall behind by double digits.  Carlos Rodon LHP gets the call for game 1 tomorrow evening facing Mike Clevinger RHP.

    1. Harrison pitched 98 innings last year. He's at 102 this year. Yes, he has room for a few more at the MLB level. Bring him up, FZ!

  2. Giants need to sign a superstar. Must.
    Because, they don't have one.
    Someone to rally around.
Crawford is/was the last man standing. But not enough.
Someone that fans want to pay to see.
    Posey fit.
    Someone to be The Man.
It could have been Posey this year, and they might have been just good enough maybe to squeak into the #6 playoff spot and maybe even spoil the #3, then lose.
Bryant might have fit although he's more a Kent when you have a Bonds.
Harper may not have the likeability but has the talent. A Bryant and a Harper might have worked.
How about a Judge AND a Turner (not named Justin)?
Whatever it takes ($$$) and hope at least one works. Neither has had a bad season.
They'll be 31 and 30, which could be bad.
But there is, we hope, young (and cheap) talent coming. Maybe even a couple youngsters next year. With Bart maturing.
The dollars committed for 2023 is $89M, only $67M without Rodón. That will buy 2 stars @$30M+/yr each and a lot of relievers.
Might even keep Longoria for cheap stability (8 mill).

    1. They definitely need to have get at least 2 legitimate middle-of-the-order hitters. There is probably more than 1 (or 2) ways to accomplish that, but Trea Turner playing SS and batting third and Aaron Judge hitting cleanup would definitely fill the bill. Also agree the Giants need a name or two that fans want to wear on the back of a shirsey they buy at the Dugout Store.

    2. But will Ownership allow it?
The committed Payroll only gets better, from $67M in 2023 (without Rodón) to $14M in 2024 to N0NE in 2025.
Attendance has averaged 30,822 this year which isn't like it was but this team isn't like it was either!
Add a few big names, win a few games, bring up some interesting young guys, and perhaps it will head back toward 3 million (37,000/game) soon.
Just can't figure how the balanced schedule will work out: fewer traditional rivalry games but Play Everyone, who knows?
The KC's won't draw well but the East teams may.

    3. What about Josh Bell, Brandon Nimmo, Thor(for 1 year) and a couple of veteran relievers?

    4. Is that who the fan base wants?
If a fan is flexible enough to pick which games they might want to see, can they catch Thor? Will he start more than10 games at home?
If they're not at a game, are they going to look up what Bell or Nimmo did? Is there a groundswell for either?
Who in tonight's lineup does anyone care about? How many know who has the only Giant hit through 3 innings? Who knows what his BA is? The only Giant base runner of the night got to 2nd on a wild pitch with 2 outs, and they're 0-1 with RISP.
Who is watching TV and hanging on Dave's every word?
This is not an interesting team with interesting players to others beyond the few who blog. Would Bell or Nimmo change that? Will Thor start more than 20 games @ 30 yo which he hasn't done since 2019 when he was 26?
Will they buy Bell or Nimmo shirts?
      Probably would buy Thor's...
And, yes on getting the veteran relievers.

    5. I don't agree that the Giants have an obligation acquire players based on which ones will make the fanbase happy. It's great to have star players fans love but the priority is sustained winning. If those stars align that 's great. I highly doubt that either FZ or ownership wants to lock in three long-term 7 figure contracts in one offseason and even if they did it is likely that would still leave holes to fill. Bell, Nimmo and a couple of relievers would be clear upgrades for the current roster but far less expensive than Judge/Turner. Thor would be comparable to Rodon but on a shorter, less risky deal. Jameson Taillon is another high-ceiling pitcher who could be looking to bet on himself. Bell/Nimmo might not captivate fans immediately but both would be on longer term contracts and might build a fan following over time. As fans we need to be a bit more open-minded than pin all of our offseason hopes on 1 or 2 players.
