Game Wrap 8/26/2022: Twins 9 Giants 0

The Giants first ever game in Target Field was an unmitigated disaster as Alex Wood LHP got pummeled for 8 runs in 3 IP and the offense failed to show up against Joe Ryan RHP.

Wood suffered his second disaster start in a row.  He allowed 8 baserunners and all 8 scored.  Just to give you an idea of what his command was like, he hit two batters while attempting backdoor sliders with two strikes.  Both of those runners scored.  Given that Wood is signed for next season and his rather lengthy injury history, the Giants might want to think about shutting him down for the season or at least have him skip a start or two.

Churn Watch:  The Giants selected the contract of Scott Alexander LHP from AAA Sacramento.  They optioned Thomas Szupacki LHP to AAA and placed Sam Long LHP on the 60 day IL with an oblique strain.  The Giants currently have 7 players on the 60-day IL.  Lamonte Wade Jr OF/1B was a late scratch from the lineup due to hip tightness.

Alex Cobb RHP will look for more success tomorrow evening facing Sonny Gray RHP.

  1. Watched the first 6 innings of this game. Like you said the Giants had zero offense. Torn in this game as watching Joe Ryan was fun but watching the Giants was not. Joe Ryan is from my home town of San Anselmo and was a classmate of my daughters. She even played on a peewee team with him. Always a great kid and is now 10-6 with a 3.65 ERA for the Twins. Giants originally drafted him in 2014 in the 39th round, but he did not sign and played college ball instead.

    2. BTW, my wife grew up in Sioux Falls, SD and is a Twins fan so some mixed feelings at our house too.

    3. My wife was born in Aberdeen to long-time SouDakotans, you betcha. We have her father's year book, Class of '38.
She escaped to SoCal at 10...

  2. As for getting younger and more athletic, Dixon Machado is already 30...maybe that qualifies on this roster?

    1. Nothing against Brandon Crawford who is by far the best SS the Giants have ever had, but it seems like the Giants are going to miss out on all the mid-career superstar free agent shortstops(how's that for a demographic?) while Crawford's career winds down. Who is going to fill his shoes? Not that they were terrible but are we going back to the rent-a-vet days of Omar Vizquel and Edgar Renteria? Will Marco Luciano turn into one of those superstar SS's? Will Tyler Fitzgerald find some offensive consistency? Is Aeverson's Arteaga that guy? SS will be interesting to watch going forward.

    2. Thinking outside the box, it’s expected Longo will be bought out. Move Crawford to 3rd, I think he’ll be fine there defensively. JD Davis at 1st and Crawford’s rest days at 3rd. Go hard after Trea Turner and Judge.

    3. Might be able to sell Turner on splitting SS/2B for a year.
Giants probably can't sign Turner or Judge unless they sign both.
Be worthwhile to eat Craw's salary to sign Turner. He's barely a full-timer health and skill-wise now, B-R rates his dWAR negative (Fangraphs does not).

  3. Everyone posted that we are only 5 GBs or whatever yesterday. It's not the standings I was talking about, have you seen this team play? Does anyone have faith in them winning a series vs LAD, ATL, or NYM?

  5. Zack Wheeler is back on the IL.
Giants' fans have lots of Wheeler hand wringing over the years, but his major league performance hasn't been much better than Alex Wood's, nor a lot different, at more than twice the cost.
Their games started is nearly identical, both have one All Star performance, and Wood leads in the number of postseason games 21-0, including a WS championship.
Overall, Wheeler has had the better career, but Wood probably has had more satisfaction.

    1. IP/Starts declining to just a little more than 5, I'm thinking there may not be actually that much difference in team wins between a pitcher like Rodon and one like Wood or Cobb. I'll do the research when I get some time.
