Down on the Farm: 8/16/2022

AAA:  Las Vegas Aviators bombed the Sacramento River Cats 12-1.

Randy Rodriguez RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 9.00.

*************************************************************************************

AA:  Binghampton Rumble Ponies trampled the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-2.

Ryan Walker RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.08.

*************************************************************************************

A+:  Eugene Emeralds crushed the Hillsboro Hops 9-1.

Luis Matos CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .197.
Jairo Pomares LF- 2 for 5.  BA= .261.
Patrick Bailey C- 1 for 4, HR(11), BB.  BA= .204.
Jimmy Glowenke SS- 2 for 4, HR(10).  BA= .201.
Landon Roupp RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 1.67.

It's been a disappointing season for Luis Matos but he now has a 7-game hit streak and is 10 for 30 in that span. At age 20, he can repeat A+ ball and still be young for the league.  Jairo Pomares has really turned his season around.  Since July 21, he is 31 for 70 for a BA of .392.  Landon Roupp's performance this season takes some of the sting out of Will Bednar's struggles.

A:  Inland Empire 66'ers edged out the San Jose Giants 4-3.

Grant McCray CF- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(19).   BA= .295.
Adrian Sugastey C- 2 for 4.  BA= .253.
Willian Suarez RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 9.00.
Jose Cruz RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.70.

McCray keeps the pedal to the metal.  He has a shot at hitting .300 with 20 HR and 40 SB's.  He has another season before he is Rule 5 Draft Eligible....I think.

Complex Watch:

Carter Howell CF- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .381.  Howell is a NDFA out of Augustana College in South Dakota.

Will Wilson SS- 2 for 5.  BA= .500.  Will Wilson get some PA's in AA or AAA to finish the season?  He should be able to get some extra playing time in the Arizona Fall League.

Damon Dues 2B- 4 for 4, SB(2).  BA= .378.  NDFA from Wright St in 2021.

Mikell Manzano RHP(ACL, 19 yo)- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.08.  76 K in 53 IP.

Hayden Wynja LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  6'9", 220 lbs.  Signed as NDFA in 2021.  Makes his pro debut.

Reggie Crawford DH- 1 for 1, 2 BB.  BA= .250.  Didn't notice the Giants first round draft pick made his pro debut as a DH.  He's a 2-way player but probably won't pitch until next season as he is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Spencer Miles RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.  Giants 2022 4'th round draft pick.

All of the above lines from the ACL.

  1. It was reported by Pav's that Luis Matos suffered a left quadracep strain in early May which caused him to miss a month of games. Maybe this was part of the reason for his early struggles. Main thing he's back on the field. I'm concerned about what happened to Will Bedner? He hasn't pitched since mid June. Hope he's not seriously injured.

  2. I recalled a comment by Kyle Haines that Patrick Bailey was having trouble hitting righthanded. Having checked his numbers, it's pretty shocking -- he's hovering just above .100. The good news is that his lefthanded numbers are presentable (.233 /.354 /.456) with all 10 of his HRs. Bailey may not be the prospect they hoped for, but perhaps if they abandon the RH half of his swing and make him a full-time LH hitter, he could at worst be a solid backup for Bart in a year or two.

  3. Could Randy Rodriguez be in the Giants plan for a September call-up? The bullpen could use some extra arms down the stretch, and he's already on the 40-man.

  4. Vaun "the Invincible" (Brown) was enjoying another spectacular run in August through 10 games and 42 PAs slashing .406!.548!.688 (!'s intended), then disappeared from the lineup after a pinch running assignment August 12th (he stole another base and scored a run).
The incomparable Roger Munter alluded to him yesterday but his very worthy "There R Giants" is subscription only after comments that didn't say what happened. Can someone check this?
Google provides on a search of "Vaun Braun injury" the following: --"Vaun Brown, is the latest player who has apparently fallen under the injury bug" -- but what is it?
Google also provides for Rottoballer: "Vaughn had not played since last Friday when he got hit in the hand by a pitch" but does not expand and the box scores don't show him HBP.
The Ems might be holding off putting him on the IL while evaluating but who knows?
