Game Wrap 8/10/2022: Padres 13 Giants 7

Two huge innings by the Padres offense overwhelmed the Giants in spite of a pretty good game from their own lineup.

Jakob Junis RHP started the game with 2 shutout innings but hit a wall in the third giving up 5 hits and 2 walks.  Two of the 6 runs the Padres scored came after he was replaced by Alex Young LHP but they were all charged to Junis.

Young pitched 2.1 shutout innings to temporarily keep the Giants in the game.

J. D. Davis 3B went 3 for 4, HR(7).  BA= .249.  Davis is slashing .333/385/.708 with 3 HR since joining the Giants and I'm all in on him being their starting 3B next year. He's even made some not half-bad defensive plays.

The Giants get a day to lick their wounds before starting a weekend series against the Pirates with Carlos Rodon LHP facing TBD.

  1. Defensive issues are fixable for J.D. Davis. I'm wondering if Sammy Long comes back or do they take a chance on Shelby Miller at this point.

  2. Perhaps FZ analyzed the team and concluded that 1 or even 2 or maybe 3 trade deadline acquisitions wouldn't reasonably gain a playoff slot - the Giants, other than their starting pitching, is fatally flawed with potentiality not a single offensive player reaching a bWAR of 2.0 which B-R calls a Starter (2+) adding to defensive woes that neutralize the pitching when it's good. and then their is the very shaky bull pen.
He avoided throwing good money after bad.
    Perhaps.
Inconsistency has plagued the team - why would that change?
So, why didn't FZ trade Rodón? Perhaps his option to stay put wherever and receive $22,500,000 next year even if he breaks down in the last 2 months of 2022 - has he ever "completed" a season? - was too risky. He was a rental with a clause for himself.
FZ is criticized regularly by fans who want more but emptying the pantry would have been worse.

    1. I believe Rodon's opt-out reduced his trade value enough that FZ figured he'd get more value out of the compensation draft pick. Ironically the reason the opt-out was a deal-breaker is fear that he might opt in! Also, FZ values the slot bonus for the compensation pick a lot more than the pick itself.

  3. For the fan base, FZ should have gone out and got some help for the bullpen. It would not have cost that much and could go a long way to making the rest of the season more palatable. Outside of Doval, who do you trust in the current bullpen?

    1. Biggest problem for the bullpen, especially Tyler Rogers, is the Defense.

    2. The defense needs to be better, for sure, but it's not the only or even biggest problem with Rogers and the current bullpen struggles.
