Game Wrap 8/24/2022: Tigers 6 Giants 1

Logan Webb RHP apparently did something to anger the BABIP gods and they punished him with a vengeance in the 5'th inning when the Tigers scored all 6 of their runs in what should have been an easy inning for Webb.

Through 4 innings, Webb allowed no hits, 2 walks and had 5 K's.  Then, after 1 out in the 5'th inning, this happened:  GB single, GB double(on a ball that bounced over Wilmer Flores 1B), walk, K, GB single(deflected by Brandon Crawford SS)- 2 runs, LD single- run, GB single- run, pitching change, LD double- 2 runs.  Giants pitchers have had a whole lot of bad luck this season but this might be the single unluckiest inning of all!   4.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 5/0.

Giants offense didn't do much against Matt Manning RHP but Joey Bart C wend 2 for 4 to raise his BA to .230.

After allowing the two inherited runners to score, Thomas Szupacki LHP settled down:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 16.88.

Alex Young LHP and Zack Littell RHP pitched a scoreless inning each with 3 K's for Young and 2 for Littell.

Before the game, Brandon Belt 1B went back on the IL for knee inflammation and Bryce Johnson OF was recalled from AAA Sacramento.  Gotta think there is a possibility that Belt has played his last game for the Giants and possibly of his career.  The knee situation seems intractable.

The Giants have travel day from Detroit to Minneapolis where they start a weekend series against the Twins on Friday evening with Alex Wood LHP facing TBD.  The Giants remain 5.5 games behind the Padres for the final Wild Card playoff spot and have actually gained a game on the Padres over the past 10 games.

  1. it's sad to see belt's career with a whimper, i hope belt announces retirement once the season ends. vosler should get an audition in september now.

  2. Listened to the FZ interview on the TK show. Seems like he knows we need regulars set for 4-5 positions, instead of an entire lineup of platooning players. TK also brought up how we have like 2 core pieces going forward on the roster.

Also annoying to hear FZ keep repeating how we have 40 games left to turn it around. Is he watching the same games ?

  3. Vosler got the short end of the stick on his last time up. He was 4 for 10, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs in a 4-game ML stint from July 29 to August 1.
Giants are 10-7 since being swept by the Dodgers.
Padres are 7-12 since Aug 4.
Brewers are 8-14 since the end of July.
Perhaps FZ has been watching that...

  4. In the last 3 weeks, since the end-of-the-day August 5, the Giants have picked up 3 full games on both the Padres and the Brewers.
SF is 5.5 behind SD with 6 to play head-to-head
and 4 behind MIL with 2 to play head-to-head.
More importantly, the Giants today are only 4 behind both teams in the loss column, meaning, if SF takes 5 of 6 from the SD, they are tied in the loss column and how the teams do in their other games determines who is ahead at the end of the day October 5th.
For perhaps more drama, the season ends for the Giants with 3 in Petco Park...
