Game Wrap 4/8/2019: Padres 6 Giants 5

Wow!  Giants fans were feeling good about this one after the Giants put up a 5-spot in the bottom of the 4'th inning and Madison Bumgarner working on a no-hitter.  That's when the Padres started hitting dingers accounting for 5 of 6 unanswered runs in a come-from-ahead loss for the Giants.  Key Lines:

Tyler Austin 1B- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .333.  More on Austin later, but he started the 5-run rally with a single.

Gerardo Parra LF- Parra came in as a defensive replacement for Austin with Brandon Belt moving from LF to 1B.  When Parra came to the plate in the 7'th, he took a pitch off the side of his mouth which didn't look like it felt good.

Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 4, HR(1), SB(2).  BA= .111.  This is why the Giants traded for Pillar.  RH pop agains LHP's.  Pillar capped the 4'th inning scoring with a grand slam dinger.

Madison Bumgarner LHP-  6 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 8/4.  ERA= 3.32.  Bumgarner had a QS in the bag, but stared down Bochy after allowing a leadoff single in the 7'th.  The next batter doubled which brought Boch out again to change pitchers.  Moronta allowed 1 inherited runner to score on a groundout, then boom!  Franmil Reyes destroyed a hanging slider way past the LF foul pole.  Ballgame!

Derek Holland tries to get the Giants back in the Win column tomorrow evening facing another LHP, Joey Lucchesi.

Earlier in the day, the Giants made a trade with the Twins for 1B/OF Tyler Austin who the Twins had DFA'd.  The Giants gave up minor league OF Malique Ziegler, then made room on the roster by DFA'ing Conner Joe.  So long Conner, we hardly knew ye!  Anyway, Austin is defensively challenged but has toonder in his bat from the right side.  If he can can play passable defense at 1B or OF, he could be The Breakout Kid.  I've liked Austin for awhile.  I think I included him in a proposed trade with the Yankees for Madison Bumgarner awhile back.  The power comes with a lot of K's, though.

As for Ziegler, he has intriguing tools and has played well for stretches, but is on the thin side and has had apparent stamina and injury issues.  The Giants have better OF prospects in the lower minors.

As for how to deploy Austin, he seems to be a liability at any position.  Seems you weaken two positions by playing him at 1B and moving Belt to LF.

  1. Maybe Bum is a 5 Inning Pitcher these Days, Boch probably stuck with him a Lil Too Long.

    1. He possibly should not have started the 7'th inning and definitely should have come out after hitting the first batter of the inning.

    2. No hitter through 4, 2-run HR in 5th, solo HR in 6th, Quality Start, 84 pitches, great pen, call it a day!
He hit Tatis twice sandwiching his HR.

    3. Maybe there is something to not allowing the SP to face batters for the 3rd time?

    4. Maybe it's time to put Melancon in high leverage situations instead of Morontha. He's lost 2 games. Although their lack of clutch hitting by their core performers failed them again.

  2. Just keep putting up 0s Watson, Smith, Melacon, Dyson. These are the parts that we can hopefully get something for (or actually dump if he pitches well enough, melacon)

  3. I'm all for Austin, they have to have some power from a RH batter since no one else is supplying it (looking at you Crawford, Posey, Pillar, Longoria, Panik, AGAIN). Sure he K's too much, but so do the rest of the Giants, he's young, they are the VETS who should know what they are doing. As for weakening defense, there are less balls in play every year in mlb, so defense is less important. Also, they won multiple WS with a bad defensive outfielder.

As for Bum, he shouldn't have started the 7th, they have 13 relief pitchers for pete's sake! There is plenty of season left so he has time to make adjustment, lets hope he can figure out how to deal with a declining fastball. He and Bochy have to realize he isn't the horse he used to be and adjust accordingly.

    1. 13 pitchers, Starers, Relievers, and Closers. Do they need some Openers?
About the 7th inning: Bum had 82 pitches through 6 but 40 of them were in the 5th and 6th after just 42 for the first 4 innings.
Surprise? Moronta isn't quite the Superman we expected.

  4. It's going to be a Fun Season w/ Z at the Helm because nobody's job is safe ............I wonder if Boch is second guessing his decision to stay on one more year?

  5. Great name 22! I think Bochy is back because there wasn't time to hire a GM much less consider a replacement manager. Bochy has some personal career milestones to achieve, but proving that he's stuck in the past re: Bumgarner facing third time through the order despite the stats clearly showing hitters are hitting .868OPS third time through and on the back of HRs, walks, hit batsmen in the 5th and 6th - with a fully rested bullpen that could have opened the 7th inning - Bochy embarrassed himself as the old school old fool and made it more obvious that we will need a modern team manager who plays the percentages not the gut.

  7. Thanks mm. Will was my favorite player, besides the swing I loved the attitude.

As for Bochy embarrassing himself, he will always know more than we do about a situation than we do but, yeah he lost his touch with pitchers since in 2016.
