Game Wrap 4/11/2019: Giants 1 Rockies 0

Kevin Pillar hit his 3'rd dinger in 4 games to drive in the Giants only run while Jeff Samardzija and the bullpen shut down the Rockies offense.  Key Lines:

Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 3, HR(3).  BA= .152.  The Giants have scored 2 runs in the last 2 games, both on solo HR's from Kevin Pillar.  Giants have scored 14 runs over the last 4 games.  Pillar has driven in 10 of them.  Right now, he's carrying the team.  Can he do it long enough for the rest of the lineup to heat up?  Panik and Belt reached base twice each and Posey 3 times so there are signs of life.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 7/3.  ERA= 1.62.  The Shark is back!  One of his better starts as a Giant, maybe his best and it came at a great time when the offense needed the pitching to pick them up.  Tony Watson and Will Smith added clean 8'th and 9'th innings respectively with Smith picking up his 4'th Save.

With the Win, the Giants remain 4 games out of first place, but somehow 4 games behind the Padres does not seem as daunting as 4 games behind the Dodgers.  Speaking of the Dodgers, they got swept out of St. Louis and now trail the Padres who topped the D'Backs, by a game.  The Giants are just 3 games behind the Dodgers.  The Giants also gained 0.5 games in the Wild Card Race for a 3.5 game deficit.

From all the rebuild and firesale talk in the comments, you'd think the Giants were already hopelessly out of contention, but hey, things aren't looking so bad, at least for the moment, thanks to a big stumble by the Dodgers.

Drew Pomeranz takes the mound for game 2 of the series tonight facing RHP Chad Bettis.

  1. I'm happy for Both Pillar and Samardja. Pillar was emotional leaving the Blue jays since he was there his entire career until now. And we know what a tough year Samardja had in 2018, hope he continues his nice comeback in 2019.

    1. Yet if the team falters all of last night's heroes could be packaged for prospects: Shark, the two relievers, and even Pillar could all be shipped off to a contender at the trade deadline. Those four players could be real tradable assets come summertime.

  2. Even if it turns out that the veteran Giants are only playing for trade value, it's nice to suspend the reality of the standings and forecasts and watch a dominant pitching performance and a clean 1-0 win. Joey Bart is looking almost ready for 2020 - and since Posey has become a light-hitting defense-only catcher, could he be on the trading block this year?
