Down on the Farm: 4/22/2019

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees stung the Sacramento River Cats 8-4:

Austin Slater 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .273.
Donovan Solano 3B- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .353.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.86.

Donovan Solano has been raking since the beginning of spring training.  He also has a fairly long track record  of poor hitting in the majors, so this may all be a mirage.  1B seems like a waste of talent for Austin Slater but I guess the OF is so crowded, that's the only way he's going to get PA's.

AA  Reading Fightin' Phils edged out the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-1:

Jacob Heyward CF- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .313.
Jonah Arenado 1B- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .364.
Alfred Gutierrez RHP- 3.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.82.
Conner Overton RHP- 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.08.

Alfred Gutierrez is apparently a minor league FA out of the Tigers organization, but he's just 23 yo.

A+  San Jose Giants blanked the Modesto Nuts 4-0:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(5), BB.  BA= .263.
Logan Baldwin LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .204.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.98.
John Russell RHP= 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.30.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 9.00.

It's a long season, but the early returns on Heliot Ramos are quite encouraging.  Is Caleb Baragar finally finding traction as a pitching prospect?

A  Augusta Greenjackets defeated the Hickory Crawdads 5-1:

Shane Matheny SS- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .269.
Frankie Tostado 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .340.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 1 for 2, 2B, BB, SF.  BA= .250.
Aaron Bond RF- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .226.
Blake Rivera RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.86.
Preston White RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.14.
Jesus Tona RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Blake Rivera's combined line for his last 2 starts is 10 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 14 K's. Stay hot, Frankie Tostado!

  1. The Slater and Williamson misadventure continues.
In order to be competitive in 2019, the Giants was dependent on a resurgence of the veterans and some outfield improvement to go along with 2 or 3 strong starting pitchers and very good relief.
Adding 2 veteran lefties filled the rotation, how well remains to be seen.
If the OF became better than last year's, less would be required of the veteran C-IF.
Farhan flunked the preseason as far as improving the OF, adding an aging Parra to replace inadequately an aging McCutchen and rolling snake-eyes on a pair of minor leaguers.
Adding Pillar and Austin were helpful, but hardly enough without contributions from the core, which has not materialized.
At 15% of the season behind them, the decisions are still embryonic and the Giants are in last place in the NL West.
Meanwhile, two OFers the Giants owned for free, Mac and Slater, although maybe not as good as Pillar and Parra, they are the future and the Giants couldn't be much worst than last place with them.

    1. I agree that Farhan kinda blew it this off-season with respect to the OF....Snoozing on other potential deals and waiting and settling on players like Maybin (for awhile) and Parra.....But, while I like Mac and would have given him a chance (which he still may get), Mac and Slater and Shaw did not make it easy for Farhan by doing absolutely nothing to win a job or show that they are the future.....And because of all this, Farhan was left to scramble and make unsuccessful trash heap dives for Reed and Joe (both silly moves)and subsequent additional trades for Austin (meh!) and Pillar, the latter which may be of help....There's still a chance MAC and, heck, maybe even Gerber gets a chance and succeeds but..till now, it has pretty much been a disaster, and much of it of Farhan's doing...But, hopefully, MAC and GERBER continue to heat up and press their way to join DUGGAR (with needed rest!)
