Game Wrap 4/7/2019: Rays 3 Giants 0

The Giants offense went back in it's shell mustering just 5 singles and 2 walks against 12 K's in a whitewashing at the hands of the Rays.   Key Lines:

Drew Pomeranz LHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 5-1.  ERA= 4.00.  94 pitches in 4 innings or 23.5 per inning.  Gotta get more efficient than that!  Not that it would have mattered in this game.

Trevor Gott RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.59.  Gott's preseason success has carried over into the season.  Looks like the Giants have a keeper.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 2/0.  ERA= 0.00.  3 groundballs, 1 for a single, 1 for a GIDP.  Melancon continues to get through low leverage innings.  Encouraging to see him keep the ball on the ground.  I'd like to see a few clean innings before I trust him with higher leverage.

Christian Arroyo 3B- 2 for 3.  BA= .333.  Arroyos got called up when Joey Wendle went on the IL.  He has 3 hits in 9 AB/PA. Wish the kid well.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants record dropped to 3-7.  If the Dodgers lead over the Rockies holds up, Giants will find themselves 5 games off the pace tied with the Rockies for last place in the NL West.

*********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner will try to get the Giants off to a winning start in their payback series with the Padres starting tomorrow.  Opening Day rematch against LHP Eric Lauer.

  1. Three series, three wins. What will they play, like 54 series in a season? 54-108 is the current projection. Please keep the minor league reports coming through Dr B - there's hope for the future!

    1. 30% winning is even worse: 48 wins!
Opposition is 21-7. Either the Giants either are playing good teams or are making them look good..

  2. Giants spiral downward since 2014 continuing, I can see a Yard Sale at the Break as we continue to rebuild.

    1. Continue rebuild? I mean, when did a rebuild start? I haven’t seen any signs of it yet.

    2. The minute Z was hired Giants started the Rebuild, change in direction, change in Policy, change in Leadership.

    3. Amazing how people see things they wish and hope for without a shred of evidence. I’ll believe a rebuild is occurring when I start seeing veterans traded for prospects, contracts eaten and prospects given playing time over veterans.

  3. What a mess!
Longoria is 3 - 26, Panik has fallen off a cliff, Parra is 2 - 11 against LHP, Duggar is leading off with a .273 OBP, Connor Joe is pinchhitting with a .067 BA, Pillar although sensational in CF can't hit a lick.
Solarte should lead off until he learns that Giants can't hit.
Belt should bat 3 or 4 with maybe Crawford in front of him -- ride the hot horse.
Bum should be the first RH pinchhitter off the bench. Joe can run for him!
Looks like SF will have pitchers to trade in July.

    1. Well, not Connor Joe any more - that was a weird choice for a placeholder but he's gone now. Here comes Tyler Austin from the Twins, next candidate. Lots to trade in July, so many good teams that might make the playoffs if they just had _____________ (insert Giants pitcher's name here)

  4. I realize it’s still early in the season but the Giants are tough to watch or listen too right now, especially on offense. I feel like we’re watching the slow and painful demise of our team that won 3 World Series in 5 years. Unfortunately the next big date on the baseball calendar for the Giants is 07/31/19. I just hope that the guys that we could move at the deadline are playing relatively well so we can get some good returns for them. Still going to watch or listen but definitely with a different perspective. It just won’t have that edge of competing for the playoffs as we’ve had for the most part since 09.

    1. Watching a Team Rebuild can be fun too, watching new inexperienced Players trying to win a spot on the New Giants can be fun too..........you just have to admit we were long over due for this and its going to get worst before it gets better.

    2. 1. No, I don’t admit that. 2. What young players are you watching? Kevin Pillar? Gerardo Parra? Erik Kratz? Yangervis Solarte? Please let me know when the rebuild starts so I can watch these young players you speak of.

    3. didn't say I was watching Young Players but after Z starting moving The Core you will see more of that for now Duggar, maybe Slater comes back fairly soon, I like Garcia, Beede, Adon, Webb, Shaw plus whomever Z adds as he continues to revamp this Old, Slow, under performing Team.

  5. It is too early to panic. While it's not clear where additional offense is going to come from, other than Buster rediscovering some power, it seems that the pitching may be good enough to keep the Giants in a lot of games.

On the other hand, is anyone really harboring illusions of the Giants contending in 2019, or 2020 for that matter? If Giants management has not started to plan for a significant drop in attendance, they are derelict in their duties. So, the question I have is, at what point do the Giants get the best return for Bumgarner and Will Smith? It seems a team should be willing to give up more to get 5 1/2 months of service now, than for 2 months of service in July. But, I know it's not that simple.

    1. You can add Crawford and Belt to that list. On the pitching side, we may have more.

Obviously shopped them but was not pleased with the returns. He thinks he can sell higher.

  6. Is Tyler Austin the answer? This roster churn at the bottom of the 25 man is dizzying. Hope there is a Max Muncy in there somewhere.

    1. Who knows, but if I were him, I wouldn't move my family to SF, lol. I'm not surprised now that there were 52 transactions involving the 2018 Dodgers roster. Then again, maybe this is part of the reason the Dodgers system has good depth.

  7. Hey Doc, I follow some of Schulmans tweets and articles, and he seems to think this is the beginning of a Zaidi rebuild based on people he's spoken to with the Giants. I know Z has said he wants the team to be competitive. I totally get your view that they are trying to compete. As mentioned earlier, if Zaidi is not being honest with the fan base, that's wrong.

    1. We have to start off being Honest with ourselves, do we really believe The Core can all have bounce back years and lead this Team to Victory! I don't, I have watched them deteriorate over the last 4 years and this mess is the result. Evans / Sabean didn't have the inner strength to make the hard calls, they were led by their emotions trying to give The Core one last hurrah.

      Delete
    2. Why is it necessary for Zaidi to be honest with the fan base? Being honest to fans allows competitors to exploit your strategy.

And fans don’t want honesty. Look at the roster. Look at the farm. Take a look around baseball. This team is not good and help is not on the way any time soon. Fans do not want that honesty. They do not want the truth.

This is going to take while. This is the result of years of bad drafts (because of both poor draft position and poor strategy) and slowly bleeding off what little talent there was in the farm to try to wring out one more year of competitiveness. And I applaud them for trying. But this is the result.

We are fans. We consume a product. We don’t have a say in the manufacture of that product. We are not owed an explanation as to why decisions were made or how they go about their business.

I don’t have an opinion on the quality of Zaidi yet. It’s early and he was dealt a crap hand. As in poker, I’m not expecting the player to explain his strategy to an observer during the game.

    3. 1. Whatever his faults. Sabean was always honest with the fans and he was pretty successful. 2. Zaidi does not owe the fans honesty, but when he utterly fails to achieve his own stated goals for the offseason, he should expect criticism and frustration from the fans.

  8. These post-game threads are more entertaining than the actual games. Day Trader Z Strikes Again. Austin is coming to the Big Club to play LF - no, not Austin SLater, Tyler Austin - see "Big" Trade News. 12,000 Empty SEATS - Management must be gettimng nervous, haha

    1. Just for more weirdness, Belt is pencilled in for LF tonight and Tyler Austin at 1B.

    2. Maybe that’s a secret plan end Belt’s career with an injury?

  9. Who is Tyler Austin and can a thumper with limited mobility in the OF and plenty of whiffs at the plate be expected to contribute in a big way?

  10. LOL, "watching new inexperienced Players trying to win a spot on the New Giants can be fun" -- and we only heard loud groans when Reed and Joe started the season in the ALL New Giants Outfield!
OTOH, I promise not to groan out loud when the OFer "kids" Mac (28), Yastrzemski (28), Ramos (27), Gerber (26), and Slater (26) team up with Duggar (25).
Or will it be Ramos (19), Canario (18), Pomares (18), Fabian (21), or the older guys like Shaw (25) and Quinn (23)?
Other than 2B, 3/4's of the IF plus catcher is locked in until 2022.
Perhaps the best thing the Giants can get for Bumgarner and Smith in July is require the taker to include an IFer as part of a package: you get Bumgarner for free but you have to take Longoria, too.

  11. Whatever happened to this team, the start of it was during the All Star break in 2016... The Giants went into the AS break with the best record in baseball and from that break on, they played the worse baseball in the MLB... Duffy was traded and Nunez was brought in. Whatever happened, it sucked the life out of this team and left it on life support since then... It is early, yes it is, but the habits are building now that matches the last 2 seasons and to open the season with an OF like the Giants did this year is just more stacking manure. This team is NOT better than last years team offensively...

  12. What we're not going to see is Excellence at First Base, with scoops, reaches, or throws.
Austin has played some OF, not much, but he must really be bad there to have him play first and BB in left!
If I were a pitcher, I'd not watch any balls hit to LF or throws to first on a bounce.
