Down on the Farm: 4/6/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats pounded the Tacoma Rainiers 11-5:

Mike Gerber CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .500.
Mac Williamson RF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .500.
Aramis Garcia C- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .333.
Donovan Solano 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .375.
Mike Yastrzemski DH- 2 for 3, 3B, SF.  BA= .429.
Zach Green 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .455.
Breyvic Valera 3B- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .273.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 9/2.  ERA= 1.80.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Lots of good stuff here.  Mac finally makes his 2019 Sacramento debut and fails to hit a dinger.  For those of you wondering what happened to Shaun Anderson....well....nothing.  He was terrific for 5 innings.  Minor leagues have different roster rules and teams tend to shuffle SP's on and off the roster.

Strong Start for Conner Menez who probably should be pitching for Sacramento.

A+  Visalia Rawhide outlasted the San Jose Giants 1-0 in 11 innings:

Heliot Ramos CF- 0 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .091.
John Riley DH- 2 for 3.  BA= .667.
Trent Toplikar RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 5/1.  ERA= 0.00.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
JJ Santa Cruz LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Olbis Parra RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

The hitters are struggling and the pitchers are thriving for San Jose.  4 dominant pitching performances in this game.  The Giants lost when the Rawhide tried to bunt the runner placed at 2B to start the inning over and RHP John Russell committed an error then gave up the game winning hit.

A  Asheville Tourists defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 6-3:

Jose Layer CF- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(1), BB.  BA= .308.
Shane Matheny SS- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .333.
Andrew Angulo C- 2 for 4.  BA= .333.
Jake Wong RHP- 1.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 16.20.
Solomon Bates RHP- 2.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.86.
Jesus Tona RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

I am excited to see what Jose Layer can do if he stays healthy for a full season.  Jake Wong gets roughed up in his first full season Start.

  1. While it's true that Mac didn't homer, he did drive in the first two runs of the game with a first inning single.

    1. That comment was meant to be taken as sarcasm. A reference to Zaidi's comments about why Mac did not make the MLB roster. Didn't get the ball in the air enough.

    2. and Joe and Reed can barely get the bat on the ball, what a joke - note Slater did not play last night - I know there is a glut of outfielders in AAA

    3. MLBTR: Michael Reed "had a monster 2018 season split between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting a combined .342/.423/.520 over 404 plate appearances."
Reed's not a lost cause, 26 yo, strikes out too much but has shown an ability to get on base. He and Joe were put into a difficult situations.

    4. career .269 hitter with .777 OPS, DFA'd and no one claimed him - i hear ya about 2018
I just like the homegrown folk: Slater, Mac, even Parker

  2. To say the San Jose hitters are struggling is an understatement. What they are doing is striking out at an alarming rate - batters on both the Rawhide and Little Giants. The Little Giants batters have struck out 43 times in 3 games while the Rawhide batters have whiffed 42 times. The leaders of the pack for the Giants are Ryan Kirby with 9 whiffs, Manuel Gerardo with 8 and Helio with 6. The Giants hitters have a propensity to swing at strike 3 when it is thrown in the dirt as this happened numerous times. The difference in both extra inning games was that the Giants failed to get a runner in from 3rd when they had no outs. In both games the first batter singled, leaving runners on 1st and 3rd and then the next 3 batters failed to deliver. :(

The pitchers, on the other hand, have performed well. It does not appear that any pitcher is going longer than 3 innings in the early going. Last night Trent was right around 88-90 with his fastball and had a couple of offspeed pitches, with his curve hitting 74 and even one at 71 MPH. Caleb Baragar was hitting 91-92 with his fastball. JJ Santa Cruz - listed at 6'7" had a slight sidearm whip like delivery and was hitting 89-91 MPH. Olbis Parra was hitting 94 with his fastball with an offspeed pitch at 88. FYI - Bart actually had a single and the center fielder let it get by him, allowing Bart to get to 3rd. Bart has been hitting the ball with authority - even most of his outs are hard hit. 3. Hope that free runner to start extra innings does not catch on and find its way to the bigs. Hate to see teams just given something. There are a lot of other creative ways to do this.

Maybe every extra inning each team loses a defender. 8 defenders for the 10th, 7 for 11th, etc. This type of idea is radical, sure, but at least a winning runner isn't just placed in scoring position to start an inning.

    1. I kind of like Shark’s idea of allowing ties.

    2. Then you could get by with 10-11 pitchers.
