Game Wrap 4/16/2019: Giants 7 Nationals 3

East Coast road trips have generally been disastrous for the Giants over the past several years.  They got off to a strong start to this one with a home run barrage to back (mostly) solid pitching.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar RF- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .236.  Duggar's dinger, with a man on board, gave the Giants their first lead, 3-1 in the 5'th inning.  He added a single in the 9'th that did not figure in the scoring.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4, HR(4), HBP.  BA= ..237.  Belt's blast added on to the Giants lead in the 6'th.

Evan Longoria 3B- 1 for 4, HR(2), BB.  BA= .200.  Longo's longball went to right-CF and broke through against Strasburg who had been dominating up to then.  Longo tripled to right-CF on Saturday in Oracle, so maybe he's finding his opposite field power stroke?

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(3).  BA= .180.  Pillar stays hot.  He went 2 for 17 in his first 5 games as a Giant, but his 8 for 29(.276) since.  6 of those 8 hits have been XBH's.

Gerardo Parra LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .212.  Parra's single in the 5'th and scored ahead of Duggar's dinger.  Later he doubled in Pillar and scored on a Joe Panik RBI bunt single in the 7'th inning.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.63.  DRod was up to 98 pitches after 5 innings, but left with the lead and recorded the W.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 3/0.  ERA= 0.00.  Melancon hasn't looked all that impressive, but has managed to not give up a run in 9 IP over 8 appearances.  My theory with him is if he's getting groundball outs, he's pitching well, so he may be on the upswing.

With the Win, the Giants trail the NL West leading Padres by 3 game and the second place Dodgers by 2 games pending the outcomes of their games.  The Giants trail the D'Backs, who outscored the Braves 9-6, by 0.5 games and are 2.5 games off the Wild Card pace.

Jeff Samardzija tries to clinch the Giants second series win of the season tomorrow evening against Jeremy Helllickson.

Tough news for Joey Bart and Giants prospect watchers.  Fractured hand on a HBP the ump didn't call last night.  Out an estimated 4-6 weeks.

NBC Sports Bay Area twitter feed made a reference to the "reeling Rockies."  Hmm.....anybody read anything like that somewhere before?

  1. Giants batting averages are atrocious but their slugging percentage is off the charts. Looks like they made the transition to the new age in baseball. Really liking what I'm seeing out of this team right now

    1. I think Pillar ignited the offense. He inspired the rest of the line-up and he also relaxed them. With Pads and Dodgers cooling off the Team is back in the hunt.

  2. Nice work with the alliterative home run euphemisms, Dr B. Can't wait for Taylor's tater, Buster's big fly and Pablo's parabola (don't use that one I was just stretching...). Cheers! Everyone feels good after some home runs and a good road win!

  3. Ah - I meant 'Tyler's tater' in my earlier post -- let's just hope he hits a few on this trip!
