When the Hot Stove League started, everybody thought the Brewers had a surplus of good OF's and would likely use that surplus to buy pitching, which they appear to desperately need. Well, today the Brewers dipped into that surplus and......well......they got outfielders in return! As Vin Scully would say, "go figure!" In move #1, they traded 4 prospects including OF's Lewis Brinson and Monte Harrison, IF Isan Diaz and RHP Jordan Yammamoto for Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich. Yep, you heart that right, Christian Yelich. The first 3 of that group are all fairly well known prospects. Yammamoto is less well known but had a breakout season of sorts with the Brewers A+ team in 2017. Needless to say, if you are hold in a firesafe and rebuilding, this is exactly the type of return you need to get when you trade your star players.
The Brewers added Yelich to an OF of Ryan Braun, Keon Broxton, Domingo Santana and Brett Phillips all with MLB experience. But wait! The Brewers were not done yet. After the trade for Christian Yelich, they went out and signed Lorenzo Cain to a 5 year/$80 M contract and suddenly, there are not going to be enough chairs when the music stops. Talk about a glut of outfielders!
The Brewer still need to add pitching and perhaps they now have the right pieces to trade for who they want. Stay tuned!

Samardzija for Santana?
ReplyDeleteI would think it would take a lot more than Jeff Samardzija to land Domingo Santana.
DeleteCan Santana play CF? Maybe Brett Phillips is a better target as that defensive CF they've been after. Who would the Brewers take for him? Beede? Blach?
ReplyDeleteI spent some time yesterday trying to figure out their roster implications. I'd be nice for the Giants to sneak away with one of their CFers, but I dn't know that SF has the resources to get one, when the Brewers need pitching... and SF is now looking thin there after Evan's early moves. Maybe this cascades into an interesting 4th OF-type waiver pick up somewhere along the line.
ReplyDeleteYes, we need our pitching. I note that in 2017 Samardzija was worth more in fWAR than D. Santana or, for that matter, Yu Darvish; and that he’s projected to be about equal to Darvish in 2018, and I think also ahead of Santana again, though I haven’t prorated Santana’s projection for 600 PAs. We are very fortunate to have him, and we need his services more than that of almost any outfielder for 2018, if Duggar is anywhere nearly so capable as the Giants brass say they think he is. The AstroTurf is NOT greener in Miller Park—or should I say AstroTundra.
DeleteBrewers might compete with the Cubs for the division if they pickup the right pitching. Players like Travis Shaw and Domingo Santana helped my fantasy team hitting lots of dingers. Although Santana might be trade bait. Orlando Arcia is a good up and coming SS. Chase Anderson was surpringly good starting pitcher for them. Brewers fans should be excited for 2018.
