DrB's 2018 Giants Top 50 Prospects: Honorable Mention Part II

Matt Winn, C.  DOB:  8/5/1992.  B-R, T-R.  6'1", 210 lbs.  Drafted 2015 Round 14.  A+:.215/.288/.303, 17 2B, 6 HR, 8.9 BB%, 34.2 K%, 281 PA.
AA:  .125/.255/.125, 14.9 BB%, 36.2 K%, 47 PA.
AAA:  .333/.350/.667, HR, 5.0 BB%, 38 K%, 20 PA.
I have read that the Giants think highly of Winn's leadership skills.  He also has some pop in his bat.  The K's are a problem.  With Aramis Garcia likely starting the season in Richmond, Winn might find himself back in SJ for 2018.  Coaching or managing might be in his future at some point.

Ronnie Jebavy, OF.  DOB:  5/17/1994.  B-R, T-R.  6'2", 205 lbs.  Drafted 2015 Round 5.
A+:  .251/.291/.362, 14 2B, 4 3B, 4 HR, 15 SB, 3.7 BB%, 29.4 K%, 327 PA.  Jebavy is a human highlight reel in CF and a nice combination of gap power and speed, but struggles to make contact.  I just don't see the bat playing at higher levels without a complete reworking of his approach at the plate.

Gio Brusa, OF.  DOB:  7/26/1993.  B-S, T-R.  6'3", 235 lbs.  Drafted 2016 Round 6.
A+:  .237/. 296/.432, 28 2B, 2 3B, 17 HR, 7.1 BB%, 26.6 K%, 467 PA.  Brusa is a bit of an enigma.  Scouts love his tools but he tends to underperform.  On the other hand, power hitters tend to develop late, and he does have serious power.

Cory Taylor, RHP.  DOB: 12/14/1993.  6'2", 255 lbs.  Drafed 2015 Round 8.
AA:  4-11, 4.30, 127.2 IP, 7.05 K/9, 4.09 BB/9, GO/AO= 1.39.  The numbers are disappointing, especially from a pitching-friendly environment.  He did finish the season strong with a 3.40 ERA over his last 10 appearances and allowed just 5 ER in 19 IP over his final 3 starts.  May get another shot at AA to start 2018.

Sandro Cabrera, LHP.  DOB: 6/22/1995.  6'2", 175 lbs.  IFA 2014.
Low A:  1-2, 4.14, 67.1 IP, 9.62 K/9, 4.81 BB/9, GO/AO- 0.81.  Cabrera was a relatively old 18 yo when he signed as an IFA.  He's made slow but steady progress up the minor league chain starting and relieving.  He's got an interesting K rate but needs to tone down the walks.  He still has time iron that out.  If he has a MLB future, it'll likely be a lefty specialist.  Did he do enough last year to move up to San Jose?

  1. I'm a "yes" on Sandro Cabrera moving up to the little Giants. There are worse fates than becoming a LOOGY.

  2. Who will catch at Sacramento? Houston signed FedEx to a minors contract. Trevor Brown and ?
    Too quick for Garcia?
    Am I forgetting someone?

    1. Hector Sanchez, and maybe one of the richmond vets as the third body.

    2. Yeah, thanks, I forgot about Hector!
He's a great addition, any catcher who can hit LH is a BIG PLUS, and if Belt has a concussion problem, Posey moves to 1st and Sanchez backs up Hundley.
      Then Garcia moves to Sac.
      That's a reasonable backup plan.
Wonder who is top dog at Sac -- does Trevor back up?
      Not bad....

  3. Would you rather see a guy who bats 8th and hits .200 but is "a human highlight reel in CF ... with a little gap power and speed" than give up a hit every other game creating and extending opposition rallies?
    The difference in 5 games between .200 and .250 is 1 hit in 20 ABs -- 4 for 20 or 5 for 20. Takeaway 1 hit in 5 games, you're even -- 2 and you're ahead.
To pay off, this requires more success from the other 7 position players which didn't happen last year with only Posey and Panik (somewhat) being reliable hitters.
This is why McCutchen makes sense to play RF with Pence, Slater, and Parker playing left and backing up the other outfield positions. The infield only has to hit "normally" and that team will score more and give up less with a DEF+ CFer.
Beede for McCutchen is better than the last pitcher for outfield rental (we don't talk about). Could also throw in Dyson for CBT purposes and a couple promising but lower prospects.
    IMHO, that's a winner!

    1. I rather see the Giants sign Lorenzo Cain and keep Beede in the system. Cain should be able to play solid CF defense for another year or two before Duggar takes over.

Maybe I'm a optimist but an outfield of Cain, Williamson, Slater and Pence doesn't make me grimace. Pence had down year due to injuries and I believe he should be able to get back to an average hitter with .750 OPS.

    2. I like Cain a lot but that's a big time cap buster! Plus draft considerations.
I would be very surprised if SF rolls the dice on that, but, if they do, I'd FAR rather see Cain than Bruce or Martinez.
If the FA market ever gets rolling, I think SF will get outbid on Cain. He's one of the few top FA's who doesn't have a what if.
