DrB's 2018 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #46 Jose Marte

Jose Marte, RHP.  DOB:  6/14/1996.  6'3", 180 lbs.  IFA 2015.

SS:  2-5, 5.33, 54 IP, 7.00 K/9, 5.67 BB/9, GB/FB= 1.44.

Marte has gotten a bit of national ink.  At first glance, his 2017 performance was disappointing, but there are some mitigating factors.  1.  Going from the DSL to SS in one year is a very aggressive placement.  2.  10 of his 34 BB's came in his first 3 appearances covering 5.1 IP.  3. 12 of his 32 ER came in just 2 starts totaling 4.1 IP.  He was dominant in a postseason start for the AZL Giants striking out 9 while allowing just 1 ER and 1 BB.

Marte reportedly has a mid-90s FB.  Not too much info available beyond that.  I would expect to see him in the rotation for Augusta in 2018 and I'll put a Breakout Candidate on him.

  1. All arbitration eligible relievers are signed: Sam Dyson, Corey Gearrin, Hunter Strickland, and Will Smith all received $2.5 million each according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

That wraps it up for the Giants and their arbitration eligible players.

  2. If you had to pick which move would you like the giants to make next? Trade for McCutchen, or sign Lorenzo Cain/Carlos Gonzalez/Carlos Gomez?

  3. McCutchen trade is on. Crick is part of the deal.

  5. i know you gotta give something for Cutch but Crick and Reynolds.....?! pretty steep price for paid for an one year run. Crick might be a monster for years to come!

What are the rules for qualify offers? Any chance the giants can do that for Cutch after this season and get something back if he has a good year? (big if...)

  6. Incredible work by Bobby this entire offseason. Patience and hard work pay off. Somehow he got rid of Span and Moore to clear enough money to get Longo and Cutch. Talk about turning lemons into lemonade!!

  7. Well, I'm not thrilled because, basically, I'm figuring they're going to keep Duggar in the minors and play McCutcheon in CF. Problem is that he is a negative defender in CF while playing in a smaller park than AT&T. And as bad as Span was last year, McCutchen wasn't much better in a more favorable environment.

His oWAR (BR) has been 5.8, 2.2 & 3.8 the past three years. His dWAR (BR) over the past two years-2.3 & -1.1. Span's dWAR for the Giants has been -0.5 & -2.4. In short, he's put up more negative dWAR than Span over the past two years though he rebounded some last year.

Span's oWAR was 1.7 in 2016 & 1.6 last year. So McCutchen is definitely offensive upgrade. But unless they put him in a corner, it's Pagan & Span all-over-again.

What really frosts me is that to do it, they gave up Crick and Reynolds. Crick finally developed control to go with his live arm and now we're rid of him for a rental on the downside of his career. His cutter is killer (0.114/0.136), his slider excellent (.158/.474) and his four-seam is pretty good (.244/.317 with a 14.2% wiff rate!). I mean, he went from doghouse to riding the elevator to the penthouse (though he wasn't there yet).

Crick alone was worth, to me, more than a rental on McCutcheon because with his ability to finally control his stuff reasonably well, he looked like a future top-reliever. Add in Reynolds, who was our #4 prospect according to MLB.COM, and I feel like we got fleeced. And, once again, set our farm system back for no good reason.

    1. One can debate the merits of a rental. But I don’t think one can “figure” that the Giants will play McC in CF, given that they’ve openly discussed not doing so, or that they will doggedly keep him there if they have better alternatives. I also don’t think that one can discuss the merits of Crick and Reynolds without asking if the Giants’ stock of pitchers and outfielders permits them to think of these players as dispensable in light of their need for a big bat in the OF. I would have imagined that the Giants’ FO knew Crick, in particular, pretty damn well, including his 4+ BB/9 rate and his high xFIP in 2017.

  8. I am sure Doc will have a separate thread to discuss this trade but in the meantime I have to say this was a good trade for the Giants ( and most people I have read agree). McCutchen adds a much needed right handed bat and leadership. While is defense in CF maybe question, all in all he is a big upgrade over anyone we had in the OF last year. We did keep our top prospects, Crick still has too much of a wild hare for my liking and Reynolds is still far from being an big leaguer with Duggar being ahead of him as well Ramos. The Giants dealt from a position of strength to cover a weakness, text book example of how to make a trade. With this move and Longo, the Giants have really swung their fortune in 2018, at least on paper.
