I've reported on the Giants stable of teenage prospects in a prior post. The Kids are starting to get a little national attention, but one name you almost never see mentioned is Diego Rincones who is off to a nice start to his pro career with some budding power potential. He's not as fast or athletic as Ismael Munguia, and will likely stuck to LF as a position, he is also bigger than Munguia with significantly more power potential. I read one profile that said he is a free swinger, but the numbers suggest he actually has pretty good plate discipline. He has limited projection in the body. Deep Sleeper Alert!

ReplyDeleteMLBTR notes that the Giants are talking to Lorenzo Cain, despite their having to give up their 2nd and 5th round draft choices if they do so, because he has a QO and they’ve exceeded the Luxury Tax limit. I have shuddered at the thought of their doing so, because they need to build up their farm, and punting draft choices doesn’t do that. But if they’re thinking of renting McCutchen, they’d have to give up prospects for that; and those prospects would be players closer to the big leagues and much more proven than the draft choices lost by signing Cain. For that reason, one would think, they’d tactically be better off signing Cain than shelling out for McC. I guess I should put aside draftees, unless they go ahead with the Jon Jay and Jarrod Dyson kind of player, with their homegrowners to fill out the OF.
ReplyDeleteI’m the more prompted to do this, I guess, by the sense I get from this blog, DrB, that the farm is less impoverished than the pundits would allow. Who knows? If they sign Cain, he might be playing till the clouds part and AT&T is irradiated by the golden sun of Heliot Ramos in 2021.
I don't know. I think I would rather have Jarrod Dyson/Jon Jay/Austin Jackson plus Jacob Gonzalez/Jadon Bahr AND 1 million in international signings, than a multi year expensive gamble on a 32 year old speed dependent CF.
ReplyDeleteI guess we don't know what the Dyson/Jay/Jackson/Maybin tier is asking or expects to receive, but it has to be less than Cain, right? On the other hand, McCutchen is probably going got cost either Ramos or at least one of Suarez/Beede. I would rather have Ramos than the #2 and #5 pIck and probably both Beede and Suarez too. If you trade one of those 2 pitchers, then you have reduced your pitching depth to dangerously low levels. So, I think I would rank my choices: 1. Dyson/Jay/Jackson/Maybin. 2. Cain(if the contract stays under the CBT threshold and is not longer than 5 years). 3. McCutchen.
DeleteMLBTR says it’ll be number 3, McC, the worst of the possibilities; and as yet the public has no idea how much the worst of the possibilities will cost us, esp given that Pirates’ fans are fuming over how little the Ps received for Gerrit Cole. Ugh!
