DrB's 2018 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #29 Melvin Adon

Melvin Adon, RHP.  DOB:  6/9/1994.  6'3", 195 lbs.  IFA 2014.

Low A:  3-11, 4.35, 99.1 IP, 35 BB, 89 K, GO/AO= 1.72.

Most IFA's sign at age 16 or 17.  A few at age 18.  Adon signed at age 20, so he was already well behind the development curve when he signed.  What he has going for him is the ability to light up radar guns and maintain velocity deep into games.  He still battles command issues and seems to have just one significant secondary pitch, a downward biting slider.  You'd like a guy with his stamina to start, but he may run out of development time for that and have to get on the fast track to the majors via the bullpen.  The nice thing is the Giants don't have to worry about physical projectablity because his present physicality in velocity is more than enough.  It's just a matter of how long it takes to polish up the gem.

  1. Him signing at 20 was great. He may never be on a top 100 BA list because of his age, but big whoop. Age doesn’t mean much for a pitching prospect to me. Rather, the amount of innings on the arm are more important. He can fully develop physically and still be learning in the minors by age 25. Pretty cool he won’t be exposed to the rule 5 draft while his body is still maturing and his pitching mechanics requires large adjustments due to change in body frame. If there were more 19 and 20 old Caribbean kids to sign, I would hope the giants would jump all over those “unwanted” older prospects that sabermetric bozos thumb their nose at. Really excited for Melvin

  2. Agreed to a certain extent. There are a million paths that very good ML players have taken to get where they are now. A live arm is something that can't be taught. The Giants seems to be playing a similar game as the Dodgers - Take a huge quantity of fliers on guys with great tools & projection, while the Dodgers are simply playing the same game but with much higher priced IFAs.
